The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

Wednesday Food + Drink

▪️Mādahòki (Share the land) is Ottawa’s new Indigenous attraction and gathering place in the Greenbelt. As it evolves, the farm will aim to grow interest in agritourism, farm-to-table culinary experiences, and more, all from the perspective of Indigenous peoples. The farm is the site of the Pibòn Festival (“pi-BON), opening today and running through Sunday December 5th. Take part in workshops, learn to cook authentic food, shop at the Indigenous Makers Market, walk the Legacy Trail to learn about the plants and medicines of significance in Indigenous culture, write a personal message at the Reconciliation Rock Station, play with small animals, and enjoy live performances. 4220 West Hunt Club Road

▪️Sharp-eyed visitors to Ottawa’s ByWard Market will have noticed the Almonte Outpost preparing to open at 62 York St. The festive pop-up, which opens this Friday December 3rd, allows shoppers to pick up items from some of Almonte’s favourite food brands: Dairy Distillery (makers of Vodkow vodka), Hummingbird Chocolate, Equator Coffee Roasters, and Fulton’s Maple Syrup for a limited time. Country drives to this attractive little town in Lanark County are always fun, but if you ‘re sticking close to Ottawa, this little shop is the next best thing. Open 5:00pm to 9:00pm Fridays and 11:00am to 6:00pm Saturdays and Sundays until December 24th.

▪️Hand made postcard chocolate makers Alicja Confestions’ new retail location opens this Friday at 303 Richmond Road, with the grand opening happening on Saturday. Expect the full round up of chocolate postcards, malt balls, chocolate almonds, discs, dragée chocolates, and seasonal favourites the 2021 Holiday Bonbons box.

▪️Here’s a long-game gift idea: Merry Dairy’s new book Great Scoops: Secrets from a Neighbourhood Ice Cream Shop is now available for pre-order. The book offers recipes for ice cream of course, but you’ll also find sauces, toppings, and baked goods. When you order one at The Merry Dairy, you’ll receive a post card inviting you to pick up your copy at the launch party on May 3rd, 2022. Published and printed in Canada, each copy is $37.95.

▪️Odd Burger, the vegan-only burger chain, is scoping out their first location in Ottawa. They haven't found their location yet.

We'll see you tomorrow – Martha and Darren

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️Ottawa’s auditor general says the City could do better but is generally okay in handling its money. Auditor general Nathalie Gougeon says that the City's documentation requirement means that new community organizations that would be better suited to provide services are excluded from applying. She also says  there are not enough screening for conflicts of interest of staff .[Ottawa Citizen

▪️The company that controls access to the upstream whitewater rapids of the Ottawa river is dropping its access fees. Wilderness Tours had started charging $10 for paddlers to access the river earlier in the year. The company says that it has reflected on how the limitation has affected the community. Wilderness Tours  owns 2,000 hecatres of land on both sides of the river. [Ottawa Citizen]

▪️The National Capital Commission is accepting pitches for big-time attractions on LeBreton Flats. Think ferris wheels, aquariums, museums, arenas. The the Ottawa Senators and Trinity Developments  had planned to make big developments but the plans with the NCC fell through. [Ottawa Citizen
