Our new Montréal-based newsletter mailing system has built-in polls. We’ll try it out today with a question about our event listings.

Currently, we run event listings for today, tomorrow, and the day after. Our thinking at the time was three days gives you enough time to plan ahead. But the reality is that it takes up a lot of space that is just repeated every day.

So, our first poll question is:

We welcome any comments ‘hello@theottawan.com’.

    OTTAWANS OF THE DAY

    QUOTE

    • For them to just be so aggressive, really, is just disingenuous. This is a time when Canadians should be coming together

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    🚊 High Speed Rail

    •  Cross your fingers, but high speed rail between Québec City, Ottawa, and Toronto is on. New Edinburgh resident Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the plan this morning. Called Alto, the 1,000 km route is planned to have have trains running up to 300 km/h. The Prime Minister announced $3.9 billion for trackage, new alignments and stations, regulatory matters, and consultations with Indigenous communities.

The plan is to create the line over the next six years, with stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Québec City.

A little bit of wishful back-of-the-envelope math says that an Ottawa to Montréal trip (39 minutes) could take about as much time as an O Train journey from Blair to Tunney’s Pasture (32 minutes).

    🛻 Convoy News

    •  Pat King, a coörganizer of the Convoy Siege, has been sentenced to three months of house arrest and 100 hours community service. King was found guilty on nine charges last November, including  mischief and disobeying a court order. King is also barred from Ottawa city limits and may not communicate with six other Convoy leaders.

    🗳️ McNab/Braeside

    • The mayor of McNab/Braeside, Mark MacKenzie, is resigning after much ‘soul searching’. In a letter posted on his personal website, MacKenzie says he ‘can be more open as a private citizen than by staying on as mayor’ and his reasons will be ‘clearer to you over the course of the coming months’. Although details are sparse, what seems to be grinding the mayor’s gears are roads not being fixed in a bid to keep tax rises at zero per cent and council barring the public from a meeting with an asset management company.

McNab/Braeside is west of Ottawa on the opposite side of Arnprior.

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Lesley McKay at Stittsville Centralhas the story of Joan O’Malley. In November 6, 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson wanted one of each of the three proposed new Canadian flags so he could see what they looked like on the pole at Harrington Lake.

As the request was made after hours, a seamstress could not be found so Ken Donovan, assistant purchasing director for the Canadian Government Exhibition Commission, asked his 20 year-old daughter, as she had sewn some of her own clothes. She created all three flags overnight.
