WEDNESDAY DINING + DRINKING UPDATE |
- The owners of Fairouz Café in the ByWard Market will close the modern Middle Eastern café April 12 and replace it with three restaurants: a steakhouse called Sussex & Co, a cocktail bar called Little Sussex, and a burger bar called Burger Bar.
- It’s Maple Weekend in just a few days, and to celebrate the Canadian Museum of history’s Panaorama Café is offering a Sugar Shack Brunch on Sunday.
For road trippers, Inside Ottawa Valley has listed all the sugar shacks between here and Pembroke.
Robyn Miller at the CBC talks politics with local syrup makers, asking about the Federal election and tariffs. - In the Ottawa Citizen, Peter Hum wants to be ‘charitable rather than cynical’ about Buvette Daphnée but he was disappointed in his two visits to the resto as he knows it is capable of much more.
Hum says that if you are looking for the Montréal-style wine bar that Buvette Daphnée promises, Soif Bar à Vin is right there in Gatineau. - At Eat the Strip, Ameya Charnalia found Polish sausages on a bun in an industrial park for under $6. Adams Sausages make their products on site, are only open weekdays, and don’t take credit cards.
- In Apartment 613’s Best Bites column, Hannah Manning and Kiersten Vuorimaki eat at Wilf & Ada’s (‘After putting our name down, [we] popped around the corner to grab a pre-brunch coffee at Arlington Five. [I]f you don’t finish your drink before your table is ready, you’re welcome to bring your Arlington Five mug over with you to Wilf and Ada’s’), The SconeWitch (‘I got the ham and gruyère on an herb & onion scone with a side salad for under $10’), and Ten Fish (‘I was shocked at the size of the menu for the size of the kitchen’).

NUMBER - 48
- – The number of frozen egg rolls, plus 500 millilitres of plum sauce from Ottawa's Golden Palace restaurant, brought in a carry on with Air North. ‘I have never found an egg roll comparable to them anywhere, and certainly not in the Yukon,’ said the passenger.
The CBC asked passengers who regularly fly to the far north what they bring with them: others said they brought albino corn snakes, one hundred Big Macs, and a live chicken.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
💥 Westboro Bus Crash - The Provincial public inquest into the Westboro bus crash began today. The panel, comprised of five civilians, is not seeking to assign guilt or impose penalties but to hear testimony from witnesses and make recommendations on how to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Three passengers died, 50 were injured, and tens of millions of dollars was paid out by the City in claims after an OC Transpo double decker bus hit the overhang of a Westboro transitway bus shelter in 2019.
The inquest can be streamed here.
Guy Quenneville at CBC
🎞️ ByTowne Cinema - The ByTowne Cinema wants your opinions on its membership programme and what films you would like to see. And don’t be one of those people who only suggest high-brow films because you think they should be shown yet you never ever go to one.
Mayfair Cinema
🎓 Algonquin College - Algonquin College is cancelling its academic upgrading courses as part of its fight to fix an upcoming $93 million deficit. Academic upgrading courses are for students who wish to go on to college or university but don’t have the required credits. The College finds itself in a financial bind after the Federal government severely cut back visas for international students, a lucrative source of income for post secondary institutions across the country who charge premium prices to foreign learners.
Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen
🏒 Canadian Tire Centre - The new name for the Canadian Tire Centre will be ... the Canadian Tire Centre. The naming rights deal for the Sens arena expires this year but the team has chosen to stick with Canadian Tire rather than put it up for auction. Worth an estimated $1.5 million to $2 million per year, the Kanata arena has been sponsored by Canadian Tire since 2013.
