COVID-19 NEWS

⭕ Ottawa ByLaw services says most restaurants and gyms are checking vaccine passports. Only 18 tickets have been issued since September for not checking, and most of those were in the initial weeks. [Ottawa Citizen]

⭕ Ontario’s science advisory table says cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 are doubling every three days in Ontario. The reproduction number for the Delta variant is 1.09; for Omicron it's 4.07. [Ottawa Citizen]

⭕ Mayor Jim Watson tests negative for COVID-19. The Mayor had been self-isolating since Friday after a City Hall staffer had tested positive for COVID-19. [CTV]

⭕ 5,200 more COVID-19 booster shot appointments have been made available in Ottawa after it was reported yesterday that bookings were full until January. [CTV]

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️Two threats by students have resulted in police and social workers being called to West Carleton Secondary School. One student was overheard making a threat, another student was overheard about possibly bringing weapons to school. The two students were sent home and officials say that the two events appear unrelated. [City of Ottawa]

▪️West Carleton councillor Eli El-Chantiry mulls running for mayor next year.“[The other candidates] think the City of Ottawa ends between St. Laurent and Bronson Ave.,” he said. Current City Councillors Diane Deans Catherine McKenney have said they are running, as has fomer mayor Bob Chiarelli. Councillors Mathieu Fleury and Orleans MPP Stephen Blais are also mulling over the possibility.  [West Carleton Online]

▪️A University of Ottawa study found that most sex workers file income taxes. Working with Prostitutes of Ottawa-Gatineau Work, Educate, Resist, the study concluded that 75 per cent of sex workers file tax returns, and 41 per cent of respondents availed themselves of the Canadian Emergency Relief Benefit. [The Tyee]

▪️The City is considering ending free parking for municipal employees. City staff have enjoyed free parking at all their workplaces – except City Hall itself. The plan is to encourage more staff to use transit. [Ottawa Citizen]
