– The number of years that the Rainbow Bistro has been serving up live music in the ByWard Market. The Rainbow nearly went under in 2021, but a collection of tech entrepreneurs, a FACTOR grant, some Provincial money, and crowdsourcing from the public has brought the venue back into the black. | | Lynn Saxberg in the Ottawa Citizen |

OTTAWAN OF THE DAY |
Sean Stoqua |
The former Gee-Gee and Ottawa BlackJack has been hired by the National Basketball Association’s Oklahoma City Thunder as athletic performance coach. The Thunder were once known as the Seattle SuperSonics, whose sale to Oklahoma pretty much killed owner and Starbuck’s founder Howard Schultz’s dream of running for US president. Stoqua has a great pedigree in Ottawa sports: great-grandfather Sutherland (Suddy) Gilmour won the Stanley Cup in 1904 with the original Ottawa Senators and both grandfather Blair Gilmour and father Pat Stoqua played for the Rough Riders. | | John Chidley-Hill in the Canadian Press |

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
💸 Auditor General |
▪️The City’s Auditor General says that she has found a kickback scheme between landlords and a City housing worker. Nathalie Gougeon alleges the City housing worker was arranging for a group of landlords to be paid higher rents than average for people in a City-run housing programme, as much as 63 per cent more. She also says police have been informed but the worker is no longer employed with the City and the City has stopped business relationships with the landlords. | | Arthur White-Crummey at CBC |
|
|
🪧 Salvation Army |
▪️Workers at the Salvation Army Booth Centre have voted to give their union a strike mandate. The Public Service Alliance of Canada represents 60 workers at the Centre, in roles of ‘maintenance, administration and food access, as well as addictions, mental health, and substance use counselling’. The union is looking for a wage rise, arguing that staff at the Shepherds of Good Hope make 27 per cent more than Salvation Army workers do. | | Marlo Glass in the Ottawa Citizen |
|
|
𓆓 American Eel |
▪️In a council meeting, Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg is asking for the American Eel to be declared a protected species. Up to 99 per cent of the eels are killed in the Ottawa River by man made structures such as hydro dams. The Nation would like redesigned turbines that would allow the eels to swim through, and fish ladders that would avoid dams altogether. | | Gabrielle Huston at CBC |
|
|
💥 Sarsfield Road Bridge |
▪️The City says that the Sarsfield Road Bridge over the Bear Brook municipal drain may need to close if heavy vehicles don’t stop driving over it. The bridge, in a lonesome area of Orléans, was given a 10 tonne limit last year but heavy vehicles, often agricultural, continue to drive over it. | | Joseph Tunney at CBC |

BUT, ONE MORE THING … |
The West Ottawa Ringette Association is very upset over the nickname chosen by one of its teams, officially known as West Ottawa Ringette Association U19B MacDonald. Finding West Ottawa Ringette Association U19B MacDonald somewhat unwieldy and a nod to the fact that they are in last place, the team chose to name itself after a clumsy large seabird, the Red-Footed Booby. The Association is so displeased about having a team named ‘The Boobies’, that it has barred them from using the league logo and will not support the team’s fundraising, dedicated to breast cancer research. | | Katelyn Wilson at CTV |
