The Poll

Yesterday, we asked ‘What do you think of the daily poll?’

55% I like them, keep doing it daily
23% I like them, but make it weekly
11% Keep it as an occasional thing, with real questions
3% Stop it. For the love of Champlain’s Astrolabe, just stop.
7% You need to do more polls about polls

The people have spoken, you’re stuck with the polls.  But starting next week, we’re going to move it lower down the newsletter, past the ‘What Ottawa is Talking About’, because it will be easier to ask about the current day’s news after you have read the current day’s news.

Today’s Poll:

We welcome any comments ‘hello@theottawan.com’

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    🗳️ Chandra Arya

    • The Member of Parliament for Nepean, Chandra Arya, has been dropped by the Federal Liberal party as a candidate. Two months ago, Arya had run for leader of the Liberal party but had his candidacy for that also revoked by the party. While Arya has been told in a letter why the party revoked his nomination, that information has not been made public.

It has been widely speculated that, on Sunday, Rockcliffe resident Prime Minister Mark Carney will ask New Edinburgh resident Governor General Mary Simon to call for an election.

    ⚖️ Court Circular

    • The Ottawa Carleton District School Board is asking the court to force Reddit to identify an anonymous user. The Board claims that the user made defamatory posts, using the real names of Pinecrest Public School staff members and accusing them of ‘failing to report incidents, stifling investigations, and ignoring instances of racism’. Reddit would be requested to provide ‘any email addresses, phone numbers, location data, and other identifying information about the user’. David Fraser at CBC
    • The Crown is appealing the sentence given to Convoy coörganizer Pat King. King, who was convicted of ‘mischief, counselling others to commit mischief, counselling others to obstruct police, and two counts of disobeying a court order’ over his actions during the Siege of Ottawa, was sentenced to three months of house arrest, 100 hours of community service, and one year probation. Ted Raymond at CTV
    • The City is appealing its loss against the Federal government over property tax payments in lieu. While the Federal government is exempt from municipal property taxes, it voluntarily pays an equivalent amount ‘in lieu’. After the Ontario government removed a mandatory ‘business’ portion from the property tax, the Federal government reduced its payment by the same amount. The City continues to argue that the discount only applied to businesses, not the Federal government. Ottawa Citizen

    🦫 Hudson’s Bay Company

    • All of the Hudson’s Bay stores in Ottawa and Gatineau are on the chopping block after the company received court permission to liquidate its stock. Six stores, all in the Toronto or Montréal areas, will remain open but the other 74 across Canada will start selling off what is left on their shelves starting Monday. Existing gift cards have until April 6 to be used, or they will be worthless.
      The Canadian Press

    🛒 Grocery Flyer Review

    • Every week, @Stromanker reads all the local grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. This week, he sees deals on cucumbers and chicken.

    DEALS OF THE DAY

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

The 613’s Neil Saravanamuttoo has written some spiky articles about Lansdowne 2.0. Sometimes residents forward these columns to their ward councillors for their opinion and sometimes those councillors write back.

With a Snappy Answers to Constituent’s Questions formatSaravanamuttoo has some even spikier responses to what Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and councillors Marty Carr and Laura Dudas had to say.

(But don’t take this the wrong way: Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and councillors Marty Carr and Laura Dudas are to be commended for actually writing back and responding like humans.)

    RAPID RESPONSE QUALITY CONTROL
