    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🔍 The City’s Auditor General is asking you what you would like to see audited. On a new webpage, Nathalie Gougeon has posted a survey with a few dozen candidates – light-rail transit and artificial intelligence are two – but we didn’t see Lansdowne 2.0 or the police budget. Happily, you can submit your own ideas. Deadline is June 30.  – City of Ottawa

🎉 City Council approved some significant changes to special events at its meeting yesterday. In two new bylaws:

    • Organizers of events that are delayed because of bad weather or the like won’t be penalized for being noisy past 11:00 pm
    • Licensed venues won’t need new inspections for special occasion overnight dancing
    • Street food trucks won’t need new permits to attend festivals or parties
    • City staff and ward councillors can approve street closures on weekdays for events.
    • Demonstrations and protests no longer need a permit, they can just send a voluntary ‘head’s up’ notification – City of Ottawa

↪ City Council gave staff nine months to work up a ‘bubble ban bylaw’. The mayor and some councillors want to ban protests outside schools and houses of worship but the proposal naturally has Charter of Rights and Freedoms implications. – Aeden Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen

🚌 Flixbus has introduced a new route today between Ottawa and the Toronto suburbs. Flixbus has been running downtown Ottawa to downtown Toronto for awhile but now, besides downtown Toronto, the new route includes Toronto Pearson Airport, Pioneer Village Terminal, Richmond Hill Centre, and the Cornell GO Bus terminal. Buses run seven days per week, twice daily except Tuesday and Wednesday which get only one trip. – William Eltherington at CTV   Flixbus

↪ The Amalgamated Transit Union has called on the City to conduct a ‘serious, honest review’ of the transit system. – Josh Pringle at CTV

↪ Strong Cities Ottawa will be canvassing Bank Street on Saturday to promote their idea of bus lanes on Bank. They are looking for volunteers to help. – Strong Cities on Facebook

🛒 Every week, @stromanker reads all the local grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa RedditThis week, he finds deals on asparagus ($1.88/lb), bacon ($2.97/375g), and peanut butter ($4.44/750g - 1kg) – /Ottawa

    DAILY POLL

    The Poll

Last time, we asked ‘Are you in favour of the proposed battery storage systems in rural Ottawa?’

38% Yes, buying electricity cheap and selling it high sounds like a good business

2% Yes, I know nothing about the details but the electricity industry seems reasonably competent

25% No, I don't know the details and I don't want rural areas to be the guinea pigs

8% No, I do know the details and I don't think it is safe

25% I don't know anything about the controversy but it seems like the same type of scare as 5G cellphone towers

    2% Other

Keep this issue in mind, readers. It seems like something that will getting a lot of debate soon.

    Today’s poll:

Are you in favour of the ‘bubble ban’ – barring protests outside schools and houses of worship?
