HELLO OTTAWA

Meals on Wheels is in a desperate need of volunteer drivers. You don’t even need a car, you can be paired with someone else.

Meals on Wheels delivered 120,000 meals to 1,600 clients last year but the lack of people means some people are not getting their meals at all.

    🛬 Ottawa Airport gets second rate treatment

    •  The Federal Government is creating a new Verified Traveller programme for air travellers – but Ottawa airport won’t be part of it. The new programme allows air travellers to have minimal security, skip taking off shoes and belts and removing electronics, and even allows liquids in carryons. But only Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Montréal will get the new screening lines. (Michael Woods at CTV)

      ➕ You can fly anywhere in Europe from Ottawa, as long as it is Paris. Air France starts the new five-times-per-week Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Ottawa route June 27. While you can fly throughout North America from Ottawa International, Paris is the only other international destination.

    💸 Vacant Unit Tax Appeal Season Open

    •  Were you charged for the Vacant Unit Tax for your property but you disagree with the assessment? It’s now time to appeal. This also applies to people who were assessed because they didn’t fill out the form. (City of Ottawa) (The Form)

    🪧 Federal Civil Servant Strike

    •  The workers at the International Development Research Centre are taking a strike vote. The 215 workers at the centre are represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada, who say they are being offered less than their collegues who have already negotiated.     •  Ottawa Tool Library has added another week of Tinkering School Summer Camp, August 21-25. The camp, which is for kids aged 9 to 14, teaches woodworking and other DIY skills, and promises loads of fun.
    •  Savvy Company’s Clink & Drink Pink rosé event is back on Thursday June 1. Sample more than 20 rosé wines, direct from Ontario winemakers.     •  In the ‘impossible but true’ department, Barbarella was released 55 years ago. The ByTowne Cinema is running screenings on Saturday May 27 and Sunday May 28.

    Catherine Morrison in the Ottawa Citizen has looked up the histories of the 10 buildings that the Federal government wants to ditch as surplus to needs. One goes back to 1902, another 1920, and two are former CBC buildings. The others are just old office buildings but generally all look pretty cool.
