The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

We mentioned these on Friday, but it is worth mentioning again since there is so very little that any of us can do. Here are three ways to support the people in Ukraine:

? The Canadian Red Cross appeal for the Ukraine. Money sent to the Canadian Red Cross is guaranteed get to the on-the-scene Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.

Médecins Sans Frontières. MSF has doctors and medical aid on the ground in Ukraine. This is the Canadian donation link.

The Kyiv Independent and the New Voice of Ukraine are English language local journalists fighting to keep the world updated. The Kyiv Independent is on Patreonand GoFundMe. The New Voice of Ukraine is on Patreon.

New Podcasts

Here are two new podcasts that bring to life some Ottawa issues. Neither is full of new information for people who are following the saga of former Police Chief Peter Sloly or the decision to locate the new Civic Hospital at Dow's Lake, but both are sum up the issues well.

▪️Questioning Peter Sloly This Canadaland production looks at accusations that Sloly had a harassment complaint against him when he worked for Toronto Police, and his later troubles dealing with the Ottawa Police rank and file.

▪️Dr Walter Hendelman On The Civic Hospital This Fulcrum Radio Show discusses the decisionmaking over the hospital, Lansdowne and the LRT.

Specials

▪️NYNY Salon is extending its Caribbean Days until March 12th. When you visit for your hair appointment you’ll be greeted by beach holiday music, good vibes, complimentary drinks, and specials like $45 blowouts. 3625 Rivergate Way

▪️If EVOO* is a staple in your pantry, Aurelius Fine Oils and Balsamics has a deal for you. They’re currently taking email addresses for their 2020 Early Harvest clearance sale list. Quite simply, they’ve got too much stock and since this harvest will be priced attractively, it makes sense to plan for a virtual or irl shopping trip (*extra virgin olive oil).

▪️There’s a new nut free donut in town. Available Saturdays only at the Piggy Market, choose from Maple, Boston Cream, Lemon, Strawberry Cheesecake, Apple Dule de Leche, and Old Fashioned Glazed.

We'll see you tomorrow – Martha and Darren

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️Be careful on the Rideau River, the Rideau River Flood Control Team is preparing for spring. The team is cutting out strips of ice, leaving ice quays that look inviting to walk on but are dangerous. ▪️The City is looking for Hydrant Heroes – really – to keep fire hydrants clear and visible in the snow. They City is asking people to keep a 1.5 metre clear patch around hydrants on their property. If you do – you can apply for a Hydro Hero certificate. [City of Ottawa

+ Related Man, City of Ottawa articles are quite different this week from the previous month.

▪️Ottawa's eScooter project will continue for a third year. The motorized rental scooters have been extremely popular with residents and tourists. Complaints have been both that the scooters are not allowed on sidewalks and that riders take the scooters on sidewalks. People with visual or physical impairments also find scooters strewn willy-nilly a hassle. [CBC]

▪️The City wants to put through a rapid bus transitway through Greenbelt in the East End but the National Capital Commission won't hand over the land. The Commission says that it does not want to break up the Greenbelt and that Ottawa has other non-Greenbelt destroying routes that it can consider. Orléans is a fast growing area of Ottawa that currently has poor transit options. [CBC]

▪️Ottawa Police put search for third deputy chief on hold until new chief is hired. The Police had been searching for a third deputy chief, after one of its deputy chiefs had been suspended-with-pay for sexual harassment. That deputy resigned last week. Ottawa's police chief position is open after Peter Sloly was no longer in the position because of the service's mishandling of the Trucker Siege. [Ottawa Citizen]
