WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🗳️ Mayor Mark Sutcliffe begins his campaign for a second term. UnofficiallyOne hint is the series of social media posts highlighting his accomplishments so far on hiring more police, fewer ‘zero hour’ ambulance events, and increasing the roads budget by 40 per cent. – Charlie Senack in the Kitchissippi Times

🔍 The City wants your opinion on its Community Safety and Well-Being Plan. In this four-year review, the 10 minute survery will ask about violence against women, mental well-being, financial security and poverty reduction, discrimination, and youth social development.

Interestingly, the first question is: ‘Have you heard of Ottawa’s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan’. – City of Ottawa    The Survey

🚰 Businesses who use water from the Carp River watershed are being asked to reduce consumption by 20 per centBusinesses that use more that 50,000  litres of water a day must have a permit from the Province. Private residences are also being asked to conserve water, but it’s voluntary at this point. – Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen

  • Commentary

▪️ “It’s nothing but a propaganda tool now.”

▪️ “When I heard the Elon M was taking it over, I sent out a msg on Twitter...and to say the least it was not polite; basically I told him to kiss my %$#@!”

▪️ “I’m on Bluesky instead.”

▪️ “Not interested in anything from leon [sic].”

▪️ “I am not a follower!”

▪️ “I don’t need to see everyday how vile people can be. Bluesky is much better, and not (over)run by the far-right.”

▪️ “I used to be a big Twitter user, but haven't used it in about 3-4 years. It got spammy and angry before Elon bought it and it’s only gotten worse.”

▪️ “Yes/no. I have one for work but don’t actively post or really go on it often.”

▪️ “I stopped using it and deleted my account when that maniac Musk bought it, laid off tons of the staff and introduced the subscription service for a ‘blue check’ verification.”

▪️ “Unfortunately. It’s the best way to get timely sports updates (NHL/NBA/soccer etc). I tried Bluesky it didn’t do notifications.”

▪️ “I will stop deadnaming Twitter once Elon stops deadnaming his daughter.”

▪️ “Twatter is trash.”

▪️ “Twitter and the people that use it can burn in hell.”

▪️ “I have an account, but I don’t use it. I occasionally use xcancel (mirror site that doesn’t create wealth for Twitter ... I also deadname it because Elon is an idiot). I get links to stuff on xcancel, usually from Jay Kuo.”

▪️ “Tried it once and some complete stranger immediately followed me! Very creepy.”

▪️ “Everyone on Twitter says they’re gonna quit and then doesn’t.”

▪️ “I have never used Twitter and probably won’t.”

▪️ “Haven’t in years.”

  • Friday August 15 will mark 50 years since the first Canadian screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which happened right here in Ottawa. That’s right: the Canadian Film Institute screened a weird little indie film on August 15, 1975 that quickly became a worldwide cultural phenom. The documentary Sane Inside Insanity - The Phenomenon of Rocky Horror Picture Show chronicles the evolution of the movie. The screening will also act as a fundraiser for the Canadian Film Institute, which turns 90 this year.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

  • Skateboarders have created their own secret skateboard park near Bronson Avenue and Albert Street. The bit of street had been previously closed off to cars, giving an opportunity for boarders to build cement banks, boxes and rails. The City knows about it, it just doesn’t know what to do about it. – Alexa McKie in the Ottawa Citizen
