The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

As Canada’s capital’s housing market ontinues to frustrate eager buyers, some are taking their purchasing power north of the Ottawa River to Gatineau. In 2020, the number of homes in Gatineau that were purchased by Ottawans doubled.

While house prices and utilities are lower in Gatineau, Quebec's personal tax is higher. There’s also the matter of the commute: if you work in Ottawa but live in Gatineau you’ll be contending with the reportedly heavy traffic on the bridges spanning the Ottawa River. You’ll also benefit from owning a car, as inter-provincial public transit can be problematic.

So, what can you get for your money in Gatineau? Today, we take a look at some properties that have recently come on the market.

We'll see you tomorrow – Martha and Darren

Quote: All of my co-workers were playing on Google to see who had the most famous name. I said, "No way, my name is so weird. There are not very many people called Melly Shum." And one of the other people had a similar name to a serial killer in the USA, right? I said, "You will be the one." And then we found out that I had the most famous name of all’ – Melly Shum, who was the subject of a Ken Lum photo while a University of Ottawa art student in 1989. That work, Melly Shum Hates Her Job, was the inspiration of the new name of Rotterdam's most important contemporary art centre, the Kunstinstituut Melly — the Melly Art Institute.  [CBC]

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️Councillor Shawn Menard wants to see the costs of expanding the surburbs before voting on the Official Plan. Menard (Not Shawn Mendes. Not Shawn Mendes) says that staff have said that servicing new housing areas are more expensive than servicing existing areas, but he wants the actual figures of what it will cost taxpayers. The official plan will be debated by council in September. [CBC].

▪️Carling Avenue will have seasonal bicycle lanes extending from Sherwood Avenue to Cambridge Street South.  The lanes will be softly divided – using traffic cones – and should be open this week. [Shawn Menard]

▪️Some West Enders are skeptical that dead cats in the area are the result of coyotes. Based on a necropsy from a vet school, Ottawa Police said that the area did not have a human cat killer but an animal predator. Residents say that they don't see signs of attacks in the area and want a second opinion. [Capital Current]

▪️The BlackJacks will welcome fans to TD Place on July 17. The Canadian Elite Basketball League will be the first local sports event to have live fans in the stands since the pandemic began. The team is allowed to have 1,000 fans in the stands, which can hold 24,000. [Ottawa Start]

▪️Alistair Steele has an interesting yarn about how Canada spirited Britain's gold reserves out of the UK and into the basement of the Bank Of Canada during the Second World War [CBC]
