HELLO OTTAWA

We have added a new Ottawa-based podcast to our constantly updated listCabin in the Clearing is ‘dedicated to supporting and inspiring local artists in the music scene’.

They also have a YouTube channel here.

Mailbag:

Reader Gautam points out that on Friday we blundered by calling the 14-year-old Kanata chess whiz a “grandmaster’ rather than his actual achievement, ‘International Master’.

He also notes, ‘in the article on the LRT, the word should be ‘axle’ (which has to do with transportation like trains and cars) and NOT ‘axel’ which has to do with figure skating and, coincidently, was also the Eddie Murphy character's name in the movie Beverley Hills Cop.’

Thanks a bunch, Gautam, now we will have Axel F going through our heads all morning.

    🚊 O Train

    •  O Train carriage maker has stopped efforts to redesign the axle, says the CityFrench trainmaker Alstom now disagrees with track builder Rideau Transit Group that the wheel hub assembly cause the derailment problems that have plagued the O Train. The City has told Alstrom to keep working on it. (Elyse Skura at CBC)

    🏢 Real Estate Bargain

    •  The City has the chance to buy a $92 million building for $12 millionIn 2003, the City negotiated an option to buy 100 Constellation Drive when it agreed to rent space in it for $6.3 million. The building had been built and used by the now bankrupt Nortel corporation. The 6.88 hectares of land is near Algonquin College and is used by the Ottawa Public Health immunization clinic and the Ontario Court of Justice, amongst others/ (Nicole Williams at CBC) (Current owner’s rental website)

    🏠 Housing

    •  Insurance company delay has kept residents from returning to their affordable housing building for over a yearIn February 2023, a frozen pipe broke and displaced 42 residents at Ottawa Salus building. The damage was so significant that the building ‘was quickly stripped down to its bare studs’, and repairs budgeted in the millions. The disagreement with the insurance company on compensation means the building may not reopen until 2025. (Charlie Senack in the Kitchissippi Times
