Farmers Markets

▪️ Tomorrow’s the big day, when many of the Ottawa area’s favourite farmers markets launch their 2021 seasons. All markets have COVID safety protocols in place, so bring your mask, follow directional signage, and enjoy shopping for local produce, meat, and goods.

▪️ The Carp Farmers Market returns tomorrow, from 8:30am to 1:00pm. 50 local vendors will be selling food, produce, soap, crafts, game meats, pies, and more. Like last year, there will be hand sanitizers in place, and you’re asked to leave your pets at home (aside from service animals).

▪️ The Ottawa Farmers Market at Westboro also reopens tomorrow, from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Byron Linear Park, and continues at Lansdowne Casino du Lac - Leamy Plaza on Sunday from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Masks are mandatory.

▪️ The brand new York St Farmers’ Market, organized by Ottawa Markets opens tomorrow, May 8 at 8:00am and runs until 1:00pm. Look for organic vegetable, herb and plant seedlings, indoor vermin-composting systems so you can compost at home, flowers, grass fed steer, and smoked fish.

▪️ The Kanata Farmers’ Market offers local goods from 9:00am to 3:00pm at 745 Kanata Avenue, in the Centrum complex.

▪️ Ottawa’s head of transportation is retiring. John Manconi has spent 32 years with the City, starting at age 22 inspecting drainage ditches in pre-amalgamted Nepean. He's retiring at age 54 in September as that is the first month that he can receive a full pension. [CBC]

▪️ The Alexandra Bridge Coalition has formed to save the Alexandra bridge from demolishing. Heritage, transportation, and environmental advocates say the 120 year-old bridge is an "magnificent architectural wonder" and should be transformed into a cycle and pedestrian connection between Ottawa and Gatineau. [CBC] [The Coalition]

▪️ The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says that housing starts in Ottawa and Gatineau will not repeat 2020 record numbers. This is partially, they argue, because everyone who could buy a house and wanted to buy a house did so and the pent-up demand is gone. [Ottawa Business Journal]
