The number of years that the courthouse and old jail in L’Orignal is celebrating this year. The courthouse is still a courthouse but the jail closed in 1998, although it is still fully capable of providing a colonial quality level of incarceration. L’Orignal – French for The Moose – is an hour east of Ottawa on the Ottawa River. The story mentions that the courthouse and jail were built in 1825, one year before Bytown was founded. That means Ottawa is celebrating its bicentennial next year, and we should start thinking out that. At least start dusting the fancy china. | | Campbell MacDiarmid at CBC |

– Mayor Mark Sutcliffe explaining that just because about-to-move New Edinburgh resident Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is proroguing Parliament, it doesn’t mean that the Federal government won’t pony up millions for Ottawa’s transit budget hole. | | Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen |

BUT, ONE MORE THING … |
Sixteen year-old Coal is the last remaining survivor of the former Parliament Hill cat sanctuary. Now living with his human Danny Taurozzi, Coal has been living with salivary gland cancer. Donors have given over $20,000 for his treatment so far. The Parliament Hill cat sanctuary was established in 1924 to control mice in the Parliament buildings. The final regiment of mousers were all adopted out to families in 2013. | | Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen GoFundMe page for Coal |
