    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

⛺ When THE OTTAWAN saw this item about the Federal government attempting to dispose of four custom-made, portable field hospitals purchased during the early days of COVIDwe wondered if the City had considered taking them for its illfated newcomer housing scheme. It turns out both Ottawa and Toronto did make inquiries – but the structures are too big and too complex. Two of the hospitals are stored in Brockville. – Kyle Duggan in the Canadian Press

💃 City staff have recommended some changes to the City’s special events bylaw that would loosen up rules for event organizers. Some suggested changes are, according to the CBC:

    • Making it easier for licensed mobile vendors and food trucks to participate in special events.
    • Allowing for noise exemption extensions when outdoor events are affected by weather delays or other circumstances outside organizers' control.
    • Reducing regulations for bars, restaurants and venues already licensed by the province during special events
    • Streamlining the approval of weekday road closures by delegating authority to designated staff and ward councillors

The Joint Emergency Preparedness and Protective Services and Public Works and Infrastructure Committee will discuss it Thursday and, if approved, would go to the full City council for ratification.  – Jodie Applewaithe at CBC

↪ Ward councillors for Kanata South,  Allan Hubley, and Beacon Hill-Cyrville, Tim Tierney, want the City to review its fees for restaurant patios to ensure fairness. While the City waived the fees 2020 to 2022, and reduced them in 2023 and 2024 it now charges $15.91 per square meter monthly. Pub Italia, for instance, now pays $8,000 per year for its patio. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🚧 Laurier Avenue West between Bronson Avenue and Bay Street will be closed from tomorrow morning to Thursday night. The City will be resurfing the street and working on the intersection. – Toula Mazloum at CTV

🚨 Gatineau is one of eight Québec cities approved as defendants by a judge in a new class action. The group bringing the action allege that the police services in Gatineau, Montréal, Québec City, various suburbs, and the provincial police stop Black drivers without suspicion of an offense. A 2022 case threw out the old common law right of police in Québec to stop vehicle for any reason but the class action proponents say the problem continues. – Sidhartha Banerjee in the Canadian Press
