It’s much quicker for me to leave here than to leave downtown with the traffic

– Federal public employee Joannie Campagna who finds it much easier to use a government-supplied coworking space at Place d'Orléans rather than travel downtown. Like other Federal coworking offices, staffers queue up before 7:00 am at Place d'Orléans in hopes of claiming one of 30 seats. Some bring folding chairs while they wait.

WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL

Planning Advisory Committee
Tuesday, December 17 at 5:30 pm

  • Election of Vice-chair

  • Update – 2024 New Zoning By-law

Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏚️ Vacant Unit Tax

▪️The City’s Vacant Unit Tax programme has introduced some new excuses for leaving a residential property vacant. New excuses are: rural ineligible properties (Such as over 100 years old or used a hunt camp), property used for medical care, hazards outside of owners’ control, and one-time retrofit renovation per property and owner, where the unit is occupied within one year. Without a valid excuse, property owners are charged one per cent on the assessed value for residential properties that are left empty.

⁉️ Care Homes

▪️Health care workers at Villa Marconi long term care home are ‘washing residents with pillowcases and torn bedding and drying them with paper towels’, their union says. The Canadian Union of Public Employees says that in addition, Villa Marconi owes back pay to workers. The Union wants a full investigation by the Ministry of Long-Term Care.

 🚨 Ottawa Police Service

▪️Ottawa Police Service officers will receive a 19.35% raise over 5 years in their new contract. The Ottawa Police Association ratified the agreement with the Ottawa Police Board Friday, two weeks before the current agreement expires. Ottawa constables currently start at $111,000 per year. The agreement also gives constables 35 weeks of parental leave at 93 per cent pay, an increase from 15 weeks of maternal leave and 10 weeks of paternal leave.

Next up is the agreement with the Senior Officers Association, whose contract also ends at the end of the year.

OTTAWA HISTORIC LOGO T-SHIRTS

An Ottawa Historic Logo t-shirt would probably make a terrific Christmas or Hanukkah gift – but it’s too late.

You can order if you like – we’d never say no to a sale – but the chances of the t-shirt making it to you before Dec 23 is pretty much none. It’s a great way to ring in the New Year, though.
