HELLO OTTAWA

A Freedom Convoy-positive show is opening at the Art+ Galerie next week. 

Fringe is 50 portraits, hand-crafted black and white carbon prints based on Polaroid originals, of last February’s trucker siege, from the perspective of the truckers and trucker-adjacent.

Montréal photographer Paul Ozzello spent three weeks getting to know the participants and invites people to chat with him at the opening January 26th, 5 pm.

At the time of writing this newsletter,  Team Canada, which is 4-0 since the competition started last week, is up 2-0 vs Czech Republic and will be in the semifinal.  (TMU)

    • The former department store Zellers will return as a pop-up shopinside the Bay locations at Rideau Centre, St. Laurent Centre, and Les Promenades Gatineau later this month. Twenty-five pop-up Zellers will open across Canada.  (Megan Gillis in the Ottawa Citizen)

    • Stay off the ice! says the National Capital Commission. Despite the facts that workers are on site, it's still dangerously thin. There is still no word on when this year’s opening will be but the warmer weather expected this week isn’t good news. (CBC)

    🏗️ Proposed Zoning Changes

    • The City’s Planning and Housing Committee has approved a complex of four six storey buildings, with a total of 326 apartments. The build is on St. Joseph Boulevard, east of the Tenth Line Road on-ramps to highway 174. The plan does not include any retail for the occupants or neighbours. The change was required because the current zoning does not permit residential buildings. (City of Ottawa report [PDF])

    • The Committee also approved two two-storey semi-detached homes are northeast of Granton and Bassano avenues. Eight residences would be created. Current zoning does not allow semi-detached homes. (City of Ottawa report [PDF])

      Both recommendations need to be approved by the full Council next Wednesday. 

    • Related The Ottawa Citizen has a Q & A with Kitchissippi ward councillor Jeff Leiper, chair of the Planning and Housing Committee. Nothing jumped out to us as something interesting other than Leiper thinks creating the Planning and Housing Committee is somewhat of a branding exercise.
