STATISTICS OTTAWA

NUMBER

  • 27 tonnes

  • – The weight of a Sherman Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle tank shipped from Dorset, England after having been acquired by the Canadian War Museum.

  • While the history of this particular tank is still being investigated, this model was used by Canada during D Day. It will be the only one of its type displayed in North America.

  • Ryan Clark in Capital Current

OTTAWAN OF THE DAY

  • Sue Foley

  • The musician returns home for two shows at Bluefest on Saturday, one with her band, the second as a solo, acoustic set

  • Foley credits the success of the blues music scene in Ottawa to three people: ‘the late sax player Norm Clarke, who died in 1995; the late harmonica wailer Back Alley John; and the still-rolling artist Terry Gillespie, who came to Ottawa from Detroit in the 1960s to dodge the US military draft’.

  • Lynn Saxberg in the Ottawa Citizen

QUOTE

  • [There were] tears of joy. And after that came the tears of deception.

  • – Michel Leveillee, one of thousands of Canadians who were wrongfully informed by email that they had won a 2024 Targa 18 WT boat and trailer in Tim Horton’s annual Roll Up and Winner competition.

  • Leveillee is dismayed that only Québec residents are able to take part in a class action against the doughnut chain as that province’s consumer protection laws don’t allow a company to claim something in a competition is a ‘mistake’.

  • Gabrielle Huston at CBC

SPORTS

  • 🏀 cebl Ottawa BlackJacks 101 – Brampton Honey Badgers 73 yesterday
  • ⚾ frontier Ottawa Titans 8 – Tri-City ValleyCats 0 yesterday

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚨 Ontario Provincial Police have arrested a 17 year-old boy for the attack on an eight year-old girl, initially suspected to be by an animal. The girl in Quadeville, two hours west of Ottawa, was discovered at 12:30 am and had life-threatening injuries. DNA testing now shows that there was no animal involvement. The girl is recovering in hospital. As both victim and suspect are under age, youth protection laws prevent publication of many details.  – Trevor Pritchard at CBC

🛤️ The City is finally fixing the bit of Carling Avenue near Burke Road where traffic squeezes in under a train bridge. The bridge, which is part of an abandoned CN line, will be removed and the road widened to a normal size at the end of the month. However, that does mean that Carling Avenue will be closed between Moodie Drive and Herzberg Road from Friday, July 18 to Sunday, July 27. – City of Ottawa

🐈‍⬛ Coal, the last surviving resident from the Parliament Building cat colony, has died. Coal was 17. Cats were brought into Parliament to deal with mice right from the start, but were evicted in the 1950s for more modern means of pest control. Volunteers tended to Parliament’s back yard cats for decades until a decision was made in 2013 to rehome them all. – Olivia Stefanovich at CBC

💰The Treasury Board has announced a ‘red tape review’ of all departments and agencies. Board President Shafqat Ali has given department heads 60 days to report back with suggestion ‘including removing outdated regulation, reducing duplication with provincial rules, and making it easier to access and deliver services’. – Josh Pringle at CTV

THE DAILY POLL

Should OC Transpo run trams over the many abandoned rail lines around Ottawa?

Yes, they already go past where people live

No, that is just added expense to a burdened OC Transpo

They should see if private industry wants to run one

  • Previously in ottawan polls:

  • We asked, ‘Would you call Ottawa a walkable city?’

    • 20% Yes

    • 56% Yes, but only the original Ottawa

    • 24% No

  • Commentary

  • ▪️ “There are about five walkable neighbourhoods and they come at a huge premium so people clearly want that. If only the rest of the city was built similarly, maybe housing prices wouldn’t be so terrible in the areas worth living in.”

  • ▪️ “Yes with caveats. Orléans is not walkable but some other suburbs are and of course downtown is very walkable.”

  • ▪️ “There are pleasant walks in the suburbs but don’t expect to pick up milk en route.”

  • ▪️ “Most definitely!”

  • ▪️ “Ottawa was built on the assumption that everyone drives a car.”

  • Amongst James Bauder’s charges are mischief, intimidation by blocking or obstructing a highway, obstructing a police officer, and two counts of counselling others to commit indictable offences that were not committed’.

  • At the moment, Bauder is living in an undisclosed location ‘in an RV park somewhere in the United States’. His US lawyer says he is ‘formally applying for asylum under section 208 of the US Immigration and Nationality Act’.
