There are not many ways we can support the people of Ukraine from here, but sometimes money helps:
? The Canadian Red Cross appeal for the Ukraine. Money sent to the Canadian Red Cross is guaranteed get to the on-the-scene Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. It's expected that Canada will match donations to the Red Cross dollar-for-dollar up to $10 million.
? Médecins Sans Frontières. MSF has doctors and medical aid on the ground in Ukraine. This is the Canadian donation link.
? The Kyiv Independent and the New Voice of Ukraine are English language local journalists fighting to keep the world updated. The Kyiv Independent is on Patreonand GoFundMe. The New Voice of Ukraine is on Patreon.
It's hard to reconcile our feelings on the City's three weeks of siege by the Trucker convoy when we watch with horror the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and the threat of destruction in Kyiv.
But eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, so we'll get on with it:
▪️ The City has revoked the municipal State of Emergency. Ottawa's State of Emergency didn't really have any teeth – it's was more of a ‘focus, people’ statement but it did let City officials buy things without putting it to tender. That's over now.
▪️ Constituents in the riding upriver, Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, are angry at MP Cheryl Gallant who made a Facebook posting during the Federal state of emergency calling for people to to visit the “Freedom Convoy” in Ottawa. She has since removed it.
▪️ The Ottawa Police Service Board has asked the Ontario Civilian Police Commission to launch an inquiry on the Ottawa police’s response to the Trucker seige. The Commission has not yet said whether it will review it or not.
▪️ The remaining police checkpoints will probably come down this weekend.
Now that there has been time to process the siege, there has been some good stories coming out. For ottawan readers, there isn't a lot of new information but these are good round-ups:
▪️ The Citizen’s Kelly Egan: Are we about to totally mess up Ottawa again?
▪️ The Toronto Star: ‘Pacifist.’ ‘Activist.’ ‘Scapegoat.’ The rise and fall of Peter Sloly, the Toronto police reformer taking the blame for the ‘Siege of Ottawa’
▪️ The Fifth Estate: The convoy and the questions: How a protest paralyzed a capital (Video)
