💸 Lansdowne 2.0

• Ottawa Bulldog has found the City’s report on the public survey about Lansdowne 2.0 – and it’s pretty awful. We don’t know how the Bulldog even found it: it’s real, it’s hosted on the City’s website, but there doesn’t seem to be any way for the public to get to it.
  
  Some highlights:
  
  • ‘Do you feel your feedback was considered?’: 69.2% of respondents answered ‘No’.
  
  • ‘What did you like about the pop-up events’: The surveyer said that people feel ‘staff were not listening to residents or the City had already decided what would be in the final report’.
  
   • ‘What did you like about the virtual Community Comment and Information Sessions’: Again, ‘that staff were not listening or that decisions had already been made’.
  
  • ‘Are there any engagement opportunities you wish had been offered but were not?’: Respondents wanted more in-person events and workshops, more information sessions on specific topics, and more sessions related directly to the financial aspects of the proposal. Additionally, some respondents noted that they would have preferred the consultations to start earlier in the process.
  
  • ‘How else can the City of Ottawa improve its engagement and consultation process?’: Many comments noted that they felt this was a ‘done deal’ from the start and the consultation process was just a formality. Many respondents also noted that they felt their feedback was not reflected in the updated designs.

🌊 Ottawa Beaches

• Petrie East Bay remains closed today due to high levels of E Coli but the other three City beaches are open. Same as yesterday and the day before. We didn’t intend on having a daily E. Coli update but it's proven necessary. (Daily Safety Report)
  
  The NCC Riverhouse Swimming Dock is open once again..

🚌 Ottawa Student Transportation Agency

• The Ottawa Student Transportation Agency is still short 13 drivers before the start of school. Unless the drivers are found, this means the cancellation of 57 routes, mostly in Nepean. Last week, the Agency was short 20 drivers. (Toula Mazloum at CTV) (School Bus Driver Jobs)

🛒 No Name Brand

• The first-ever No Name grocery store opens next month in Brockville. Owned by Loblaws, and branded with the No Name yellow, the new store will have no dairy or fresh meat but will have a small frozen range. • Ottawa Craft Beer Week 2024 blasts off today with 19 area breweries taking part. Get your keepsake passport at your first stop and collect stamps from each subsequent brewery that you visit. That same passport will get you some tasty and thirst quenching deals at the breweries and partner restaurants. You’’ll also find tours, live music, and other great entertainment at various tap rooms. To kick it all off, Spark Beer hosts the Launch Party tonight at 8:00 pm.

DEAL OF THE DAY

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

The strike today between the employees and both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City railways would normally be outside the ottawan’s balliwick but it encouraged Christopher Nardi in the National Post to recall some local history.

In 1973, over 1,000 ‘alcohol fueled’ railway workers decended on Parliament Hill to protest a back-to-work bill. ‘Using elbows, feet and placards, the strikers smashed eight panes of the west doors and surged into the rotunda separating the Commons from the Senate’, said the Globe & Mail  at the time. 

The Mounties shut the door behind them, trapping 200 ‘rioters’ inside with the tourists. Both Mounties and journalists engaged in fisticuffs with the mob.

At one point, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau took a look down from the second floor. ‘[S]eems like a noisy one’, he said.
