STATS

Number

  • 0
  • – The number of new grocery store licenses to sell beer and wine in Ottawa. At least 74 convenience stores have been licensed to begin sales starting Sept 5. The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers says the lack of take up by grocery stores is because they, unlike convenience stores, will be required to accept empty bottle and can returns. (Mike Crawley at CBC)

  • – Anne and Amelia are both taking part in the Bring on the Bay, the 3 km open water swim for Easter Seals tomorrow. (Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen) (Donate)

Quote

  • I say no every time because I know what’s going to happen. They’re going to put me in a worse situation than I was in. I’m never going to stay inside much, and that’s difficult for society

  • – Frances DeSilva on her answer to officials who offer her indoor shelter. The 60 year-old has been living in a canoe on the Rideau Canal since May. (Bruce Deachman in the Ottawa Citizen)

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚨 Ottawa Police Service

  • Ontario’s police watchdog has opened an investigation into the use of an anti-riot weapon at an Ottawa hospital. Ontario Provincial Police brought a man in distress to the hospital under the Mental Health Act Tuesday. Later, hospital staff called Ottawa Police requesting help as the man had become violent. In an attempt to get him under control the weapon was used. The man was not seriously injured. (Toula Mazloum at CTV)

🚊 O Train

  • Line 1 of the O Train will be closed between Tunney’s Pasture and Rideau stations from Monday to the following Sunday for maintenance. Service will continue as normal between Blair and uOttawa stations. A replacement bus service will operate between Tunney’s Pasture and Rideau stations. (OC Transpo)

🌊 Aquatic Centre

  • The City has approved making an agreement with Carleton University for a new aquatic centre. The proposed centre would have a 50-metre competitive pool, a 25-metre warm-up and community pool, and the amenities to host aquatic special events. Details about public and student access and who owns what are still to be negotiated. (Andrea Bennett in CityNews)

⛺ Tent Cities

  • The City is planning to use tents as shelters because it fears losing Federal funding. City Councillors have grown frustrated with community centres being used as shelters for people without homes, as the centres cannot remain open for regular use. However, the City received $185 million of provincial and federal funding to provide shelters.  (Ottawa Bulldog)
