HELLO OTTAWA

  • In today's ottawan:

→ Some Federal workers get to stay home because there are no desks for them downtown

  • → Put down that phone and watch the 2024 Cat Video Fest at the ByTowne

  • → There are three new bike lockers in the city

  • Reader Mail: Regarding yesterday’s announcement the new name for Ottawa’s Professional Women’s Hockey League team, Ottawa Charge, reader Louise M had this to say:

  • ‘I am very disappointed in the name chosen for Ottawa’s women’s hockey team. That name for French speakers is full of negative connotations. « Une charge » usually refers to 1-a burden, or 2-an illegal attack on an adversary. I would think that the nation’s capital could come up with a suitable bilingual name.’

  • Another take, seen on Twitter, is the new logo is way too similar to that of the Calgary Flames.

🖥️ Federal Public Employees

  • Lack of desk space has kept some Federal public employees at home this week, despite the extra day in the office mandate. When asked by Radio Canada, Shared Services Canada, Ten Employment and Social Development Canada, and Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada all said that it did not have enough desk space for everyone. (CBC)

🚌 School Buses

  • The City is creating bike lockers for the public to use while they are downtown, in the ByWard Market, and the Glebe. The lockers are good for two hours of free storage, and 50¢ per hour after that. Currently, there is no time limit. Each location can store six bikes at a time, and cyclists must book and pay for the lockers using a smartphone app, which will also report availability. (Josh Pringle at CTV) (Vélo-Transit app Android or iOS) (City of Ottawa info page)

🚊 O Train

  • The Confederation Line was closed during rush hour this morning, not because of square wheels or for going too fast, but because the cameras were not working. The onboard cameras started working again around 8:00 am and service was resumed.(Ottawa Citizen)
