NUMBER - 5,274
- – The number of marriage licences issued by the City in 2024, up 277 from the previous year. While a licence may be issued by the City, it can be used anywhere in Ontario.
According to the City’s website, a marriage licence cannot be issued to a couple who have had a ‘symbolic’ or ‘spiritual’ ceremony in advance. If you had one of those and the office won’t issue you a licence, the City says call Service Ontario for your options. - You can still get married at age 16 in Ontario, with the permission of both parents. Kids who get divorced and want to get married a second time don’t need mom and dad’s permission for the next round.
- Marriage licences at $186.55 and, unfortunately for the heartbroken, are non-refundable.

OTTAWANS OF THE DAY - Bruno Di Lalla and Douglas Cardinal
LEGO Master Builder Di Lalla, who wanted to make a faithful reproduction of the Canadian Museum of History out of the plastic bricks, asked Douglas Cardinal, the Museum’s designer if there were any architectual plans that could be shared. To his delight, the 90 year-old architect sent 80 pages of plans to Di Lalla. The end result took 1,000 hours of building and over 100,000 pieces. CBC

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
🚌 Economist Neil Saravanamuttoo has three new ideas on how to pay for OC Transpo. 1️⃣ The Federal government should bulk buy a transit pass for all employees. 2️⃣ The City should create a real-estate development department to profit from land on transit routes, like Vancouver’s Translink and Montréal’s Réseau express métropolitain do. 3️⃣ As Toronto is contemplating, the City should levy a fee on commerical parking lots to help fund transit. – Neil Saravanamuttoo in the Ottawa Citizen
🏒 Hockey fans in Yukon are shifting their loyalties from the Buffalo Sabres to the Sens. When Whitehorse hockey star Dylan Cozens played for the Sabres, that team’s jerseys were popular sellers in sport stores. Now that the centre has been traded to the Sens, Sabres kit is on sale. The Sports Experts store in Whitehorse says that they had no need to order Sens jerseys previously but ‘I'm trying to get it flown up as we speak’. – George Maratos at CBC

We can’t recap this story because its mostly photos. Photographer Ashley Fraser went to Bate Island in the Ottawa River to capture pictures of those kayakers who have decided the water is just ice-free enough to take on the rapids. THE OTTAWAN is more than happy to wait until the Tavern on the Island reopens. |
