WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

⛑️ Rideau River

•  Two have died after four teenagers fell through the ice on the Rideau River Wednesday night. The two boys were students at John McCrae High School. A 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy managed to pull themselves from the water and were treated for hypothemia. (Charlie Senack in the Manotick Messenger)

🏒 Women’s Professional Hockey League

•  The CBC will be streaming four Women’s Professional Hockey League matches in the new year. Really, we think that this is a streaming schedule of the Toronto and Montréal teams but it just happens that they play Ottawa periodically. We’ll take what we can get but the first match next Tuesday will not be broadcast. (Andrea Yu in CBC)

New Year’s Eve

Don’t forget that OC Transpo buses, O Train, and ParaTranspo are free after 6:00 pm.

•  Start your celebration early with a visit to the Soca Kitchen, for the NYE Brunch.

•  Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata is offering a five course dinner, music by Beats N Keys N Friends, and a dance floor until the wee hours. Call 613-271-1900 or email reservations@brookstreet.com

•  The Scottish Society of Ottawa’s Hogman-eh! event returns to the Lansdowne Park Horticulture Building on Sunday night. This is allegedly the largest Hogmanay celebration outside Scotland, with ceilidh-style music, drumming, dancing, and lots to eat and drink (including a single malt whisky at the bar). 5:00 pm to 1:00 am.

•  All Saints Event Space presents 2024 NYE Masquerade, a glamorous affair with an entire building full of entertainment, bars, and dancing until 2:00 am. There’s also a limited seating four course dinner from Working Title Kitchen for an additional price.

•  Keep it casual with a visit to the Broadhead Brewery taproom, where Rich McGrath will perform a solo acoustic set.

•  Bicycle Craft Brewery is open 11:00 am to 4:00 pm for your final Sunday afternoon beer-drinking of the year.

•  Beyond the Pale’s NYE bash with Bytown Sea Shanty Collective will be a rollicking good time. You’ll receive a lyric book so you can sing along to the shanties, all while you enjoy fine beer.

•  Enjoy dinner and live music, plus a complimentary glass of bubbly at midnight, at Whitewater Brewing’s Lakeside Brew Pub (78 Pembroke Street in Cobden). Reservations are recommended.

•  Dine at home with Maker Feed’s NYE Dinner for 2, with glazed ham, sprouts, carrots, scalloped potatoes, and yummy dessert. Order now for pickup on NYE between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
   

New Year’s Day

•  Start the year with some culture: the National Gallery of Canada is open today.

•  Hintonburg Public House will be open 11:00 am to 9:00 pm to discuss what you got up to last night.

•  Ottawa Street Markets Farm Store at 1805 Gaspé Ave will be open as usual from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
