WEDNESDAY FOOD + DRINK UPDATE

STATS

Number

  • 32
  • – The number of cases of whooping cough reported to Ottawa Public Health, part of a trend of increasing reports across Ontario. Public Health would like to remind parents to vaccinate their kids on the standard schedule: 2, 4, 6, and 18 months of age, a booster at a 4 to 6 years-old and another at 14 to 16 years-old.  (City of Ottawa)

➕ Related Ottawa Public Health is using drones to fight West Nile Virus. We prefer to imagine it as a Star Wars-type battle of drones vs mosquitoes but apparently they just use it for spraying larvicide in hard-to-reach areas.

Ottawan of the Day

  • Eva Konopacki
  • – The 98 year-old decorated war hero was sent to a prisoner of war camp for her part in the Warsaw Uprising, 80 years ago tomorrow. The camp was liberated by the Polish First Armoured Division, which continued the campaign in Northern Europe with the First Canadian Army. Konopacki will lay a wreath tomorrow at Confederation Park in rembrance of the Canadian airmen who died flying support missions during the uprising. (Irene Tomaszewski in the Ottawa Citizen

Quote

  • The little things you may get from drone footage have very little impact, I feel, in how the game is played. It’s mano versus mano.

  • – Atlético Ottawa head of development Drew Beckie after being asked about Team Canada using a drone to spy on Team New Zealand’s practice. This aligns with the opinion of a friend of the ottawan, Darren’s brother, who says that soccer teams don’t have plays like football, ie., you could stand on the edge of the field and watch the other team practice, but it won’t help your team at all. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

Sports

  • ⚾ FRONTIER Ottawa Titans 9 – Trois-Rivières Aigles 10 last night

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

⚕️ Dr Brian Nadler

  • The Crown will appeal the acquittal of Dr Brian Nadler on four charges of murder. Nadler had been accused of murdering four of his elderly patients at Hawkesbury and District General Hospital but was acquitted on all charges. The Crown bases its appeal on the trial judge excluding various bits of evidence. The doctor maintains his innocence and says all the deaths were the result of COVID 19. (Kristy Nease at CBC)

💰 2022 Civic Election

  •  Campaigners Horizon Ottawa have been found to have violated campaign finance rules, according to an audit. The audit was spurred by a complaint that an event called HorizonFest was a campaign event with unreported money, not a community event, despite the fact that Horizon Ottawa lost money. The audit also found that $947.24 in election campaign expenses were made before the election period, in contravention of the rules. The City’s Election Compliance Audit Committee will decide August 6 if legal action will be taken. Horizon Ottawa maintains it has not broken the law, and that the rules are open to interpretation. (William Eltherington at CTV)

⚖️ Britannia Beach

  •  The sharp drop-off at Britannia Beach is responsible for three drownings says the coroner. The coroner had previously made five recommendations to the City: employ lifeguards during all daylight hours, play a pre-recorded warning during off hours, install markers at the drop-off, conduct a life saving audit each year, and consider filling in drop-offs on all beaches.

Last December Dan Chenier, general manager of Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services, answered the coroner, stating that no other city has all day lifeguards, recordings at night would bother residents, and morning and evening daylight is ‘conducive to effective supervision’.

(Bruce Deachman in the Ottawa Citizen)

📚 Good Read

  •  Norman’s Conquest is a recommended summer book read in an Ottawa Citizen roundup. The yarn, by local author Don Butler, is about a newspaper reporter who has retired to the good life but then a murder pulls him back in. (Pat St Germain in the Ottawa Citizen) (Norman’s Conquest

💡 Aurora Borealis

  • The aurora borealis should be visible this week in Ottawa – if the clouds go away. The best times to see it would be tonight and tomorrow between 10:00 pm and 2:00 am, looking north.  (Ken Warren in the Ottawa Citizen
