• We mentioned this yesterday but we’re highlighting it again: if the heat is getting to you, all Ottawa libraries and community centres have air conditioning and are welcoming to everyone who needs to cool off.
  
  Ottawa Public Health has also created a handy interactive Places to Cool Off map that not only shows those libraries and community centres but also beaches, splash pads, parks, and pools.
  
  And when is the last time you went to a cinema? Take this as your permission from the universe that you should go out and see a movie in a bone chillingly cold theatre.

New Zoning Bylaw

• There is a virtual information session on the new housing-forward zoning bylaw tomorrow evening between 6:30 pm and 8:00 pm. City staff will be talking parking spaces, the difference between height and storeys, and how you can get permission for a 24 hour pass to leave your 15 minute city zone*.

WEDNESDAY FOOD + DRINK UPDATE

• Fruittopia Cafe will be your new go-to spot for Snow Ice Cream, made fresh in on site before your eyes. The cafe opens Saturday (June 22). 
• Beachconers has opened a new shop in Hintonburg. Open daily from 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Love and Electric serves classic ice cream flavours as well as specialties like ‘Peanut Butter and Gay’ (peanut butter ice cream with jam swirl). 1004 Wellington St. W. K1Y 2X9
• The dress code is pyjamas as Saturday (and Sunday) Morning All-You-Can-Eat-Cereal Cartoon Parties return to the Mayfair Theatre. What’s on screen: classic Saturday morning cartoons including retro commercials. It’s a feel good-laste good way to start your weekend. Bring your own cereal bowl. 
• The Royal Oak pub in Barrhaven is holding an East Coast style lobster boil on Friday night (June 21). 
• Ottawa is getting two Chick-Fil-A outlets. The first will be at the Tangier Outlets in Kanata in July, the other in the Rideau Centre food court this autumn. 
• Peter Hum at the Ottawa Citizen is getting dangerously close to sliding into Eat the Strip’s lane. Hum discovered African BBQ House when ‘I drove past its strip mall and saw its sign advertising a $9.99 “quarter chicken leg with fries”.’ How did Hum find his $9.99 meal? He was rewarded ‘with a moist, crisp-skinned, juicy and fantastically flavourful chicken leg, on top of more crisp fries than I could eat’. 
• Eat the Strip’s case in point: ‘there’s a special place in my heart for takeout joints that operate in industrial parks, sandwiched between business that usually have less to do with food and more to do with car parts’ says Ameya Charnalia in his review of Grenfell Catering. Says Charnalia of the Patty Sandwich – Jamaican beef patty with a generous serving of spicy jerk chicken and crunchy coleslaw – ‘It was, perhaps, one of the best sandwiches we’ve had in the city’.
• For 2024, the City has issued licenses to 70 food trucks, 12 food carts such as hot dog stands, and 16 mobile canteens.
• After nearly a decade as chief executive of the Ottawa International Airport, Mark Laroche is retiring. The Ottawa Business Journal interview finds that his favourite place for a quick meal is Lansdowne, but the special meals are at The Shore Club at the Westin or The Whalesbone on Bank Street. 
• This is your early notificiation that the 4th Annual Chicken BBQ Drive-Thru is on, we repeat the 4th Annual Chicken BBQ Drive-Thru is on. For $24, you get a ¼ BBQ Chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, bun, apple pie, and water. It’s a fundraiser for the North Lanark Agricultural Society and it will be at the Almonte Fairgrounds, July 19.

He’s not just the goalie for the new Ottawa Black Bears National Lacrosse League team but is also the employer of 12 people through his company, Dunk Disposal, a waste management and junk removal company located in Orangeville. 🔥 Fire Ban

• To no one’s surprise, the City has instituted a ban on open air fires until further notice. This includes those who have existing fire permits. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

🏘️ Sprawl

• Two dozen home owners in Eastboro cannot move into their new builds because of a standoff between the developer and the City. The hitch is the storm sewer – developers are normally required to pay for the bits that service a new project but can be reimbursed for anything that improves the sewer system for those outside the community. The developer says it has done $19 million of community improvements, the City says it has done $4 million. Until it is worked out, no one can move in. (Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen)
  
  ➕Related Capital ward councillor Shawn Menard is worried that the City will be on the hook for millions on the Tewin development as the developers will only be paying for their part of the infrastructure.

♻️ Landfill

• The Environment and Climate Change Committee has approved the solid waste master plan, which it hopes will extend the life of the Trail Waste Facility landfill to 30 years from the expected 15. The plan mostly involves diversion: recycling items, diverting food waste into compost, and reducing materials. ⚓ Heritage Neighbourhoods

• The Built Heritage Committee is looking into declaring three Ottawa neighbourhoods as historic. Studies will move ahead on the Golden Triangle; Dundonald Park on Somerset Street with surrounding blocks; and Bank Street  from Albert Street to Gloucester Street. After that, the committee wants studies on Beaverbook in Kanata; Macdonald Gardens in Lowertown East; Wellington Street West in Hintonburg; and Island Park Drive from the Kitchi Zibi Mikan parkway to the Central Experimental Farm. (Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen)

🏒 The Sens

• The Ottawa Senators will play a preseason match against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the small town of Elliot Lake, midway between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. Elliot Lake was selected as the 2024 winner of the Kraft Hockeyville pageant, which grants a $250,000 upgrade to the arena and $10,000 worth of youth hockey equipment. We had no idea before reading this that we’d be interested in Lady’s Slipper orchids but right now, this week, is the perfect time to view them at the Purdon Conservation Area near Perth. The conservation area has 6,000 to 7,000 Lady's Slipper orchids as the ground there just happens to be perfect for them. Viewers get to the orchids by boardwalk.
