    ⛺ Gimmee OC Shelter

    • The City wants to stop paying for a temporary tarp that has protected waiting transit riders at Hurdman and Tunney's Pasture stations. The tarp went up to protect riders when transferring to and from buses. However, the City wants to cut costs and exposing passengers to the elements may save $700,000 this year. The cut is on City Council’s agenda this week. (Joanne Chianello at CBC)

    🚨 The Opposite of Cuts

    • The Ottawa Police Services Board approved a $15.2 million increase in its budget and a ban on suprise questions from the public. The money is intended to hire 25 more officers, new vehicles, and body cameras. 

      Despite a suggestion that the public participation be moved to a MuchMusic Speaker’s Corner style system of three minutes at lunchtime, the Board will keep allowing the public to address Board meetings as long as they submit what they wish to talk about in advance. (Avanthika Anand at CBC)

    👟 Elegy

    • Pinky Mitchell has died at the age of 92. Born Fred Mitchell, and given the nickname Pinky by his mom who wanted a girl, Pinky was a seven-time Ontario Golden Gloves champion, the 1953 Canadian amateur middleweight champion, and won more than 100 bouts in the Royal Canadian Air Force. His brother Paddy was also well-known, but more infamous, as a member of the Stopwatch gang, which stole $4 million from the Ottawa airport in 1974. (Andrew Duffy in the Ottawa Citizen)

    • The 2023 Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards are now accepting submissions. Indigenous solo artists, duos, groups and ensembles from across Canada are invited to apply. The awards celebrate the artistic achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis artists during National Indigenous History Month. The awards will take place Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at the NAC. 
    • The next Real Fly Market on Saturday April 29 is also looking for vendors. 
    • Registration is open for Ottawa Senators Hockey Programs between April and June. 
    • The March schedule has been posted at the ByTowne Cinema, and it’s a busy month. The Ottawa Welsh Film Festival will screen every Monday all month, and watch for viewings of the International Film Festival of Ottawa. Incredibly, it’s also time for 25th anniversary screenings of The Big Lebowski on March 3 and 4.

    The Australian Associated Press’s fact checking desk had to reach out to Roger Chapman, director of by-law and regulatory services at the City of Ottawa and Forrest Pass, a vexillologist and curator at Library and Archives Canada to solve this weird Oz rumour: ‘Is it illegal to fly the Canadian flag in the nation’s capital city, Ottawa?’. Turns out some Canadian has been telling Australian audiences this. Here's a shocker, dear Capital Region reader: it's not true.
