HELLO OTTAWA

Everybody breathe a sigh of relief, the strike by the Public Service Alliance of Canada members has ended. Employees will be back tomorrow or on their next regular shift.

Not so fast Union of Taxation Employees – the 35,000 Canada Revenue Agency workers did not reach agreement with the Treasury Board and is still striking.

Everyone else agreed to a 12.5 per cent increase in pay over four years plus a $2,500 lump sum payment. It's been estimated that employees lost $2,300 in salary while off the job.

As for the other sticking point, remote work, both sides agreed to leave it out of the new contract and work together on a solution going forward.

Alliance members will vote on the new agreement in the coming weeks.

    • – The year a fanciful banner was created for the ByTown Fire Brigade. The banner was given back to the Brigade in 1987 by the ByTown Museum but in subsequent years had badly deteriorated. Volunteers and a Gatineau printer have recreated the original. (The original ByTown Fire Brigade were firefighters, the current ByTown Fire Brigade is a historical society.     • The Penn State student football player is hoping to be chosen in the National Football League draft this week. Sutherland is one of the first players to be allowed the jersey number ‘0’, which Penn State gives to honour a player’s leadership contributions and special teams prowess. (Faces magazine)

    •  Stewart ‘Bud’ Andrews, who sketched out the original design of the Toronto CN Tower on a napkin, has died at age 92. Andrews, who grew up in the Glebe also worked on Habitat 67 in Montréal and Century City in Los Angeles. (Andrew Duffy in the Ottawa Citizen)

    🏒 Snoop Dogg has joined the bidding for the Ottawa Senators

    •  Rapper Snoop Dogg has joined the Neko Sparks group in the bid to buy the Sens. Neko Sparks, a Hollywood producer of nothing we recognize, is rumoured to have put in the largest initial bid of $900 million. Final bids are expected on May 5. (Michael Woods at CTV)

      🏎️ Autoroute 50

      •  Autoroute 50 will be renamed to Autoroute Guy-Lafleur later this week. The Montréal Canadiens star died last April at age 70. The highway runs from Gatineau to Montréal, through Lafleur’s hometown of Truro. (CBC)

      🚊 O Train

      •  The axles of the O Train may need to be redesigned to avoid future derailments. The City's director of engineering services told a City committee that the existing design puts stress on the axels and may need to be replaced fleetwide. (Kate Porter at CBC)

        🚲 Weekend Bikedays are back

        •  The National Capital Commission is reopening sections of the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway and Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway to bikes and pedestrians on weekends starting May 13. 

          Both westbound lanes of the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway, located on the south side of the Ottawa River just west of the downtown core, from Vimy Place to Carling Avenue will be closed to cars 8:00am to noon. 


          Both lanes of the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, running along the south side of the Ottawa River, just east of the downtown core, between Aviation Parkway and St. Joseph Boulevard in Orléans will be closed 8:00am to 4:00pm.  (National Capital Commission)
