For the past 40 years, Selle has been the official track builder for the Bonnechere Cup Races, the premier snowmobile race in Eganville (running this year January 31 to February 2). A half mile of track must be built to safely hold the snowmobilers hitting 100 miles per hour.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🖋️ Federal Public Employees

▪️Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada plans to cut around one quarter of its staff, 3,300 people, over the next three years. The department told the CBC that it had rapidly expanded during COVID 19 using temporary funds and the cuts would put it back to a 2021 headcount. In an email to staff, the department said, ‘We estimate that about 80 per cent of these reductions can be achieved by eliminating planned staffing, terms, and other temporary staffing commitments’.

▪️Working Federal inmates want the right to unionize and be treated as part of the public service. The Canadian Prisoners’ Labour ConFederation says that Federal prison inmates who work in places like cafeterias, kitchens, and laundry rooms have had their Charter rights of freedom of association violated by denying them a union. The Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board will hear the argument.

📋 National Capital Commission

▪️The National Capital Commission wants your opinion on its future plan. Its current twenty-year plan was set in 2005 and requires an update.

Three of its proposed visions are:

Turn toward the water and shorelines

• Locate and orient buildings, places and amenities to face the Ottawa River.

• Animate the shorelines and create linkages to facilitate access.

Create new spaces

• Repurpose and reimagine NCC assets to create memorable places and destinations that enhance the public realm and Capital experience.

Shift toward sustainable mobility

• Create public infrastructure that promotes public and active transportation.

An in-person meeting will be held 5:30 pm Thursday at Urbanism Lab, 40 Elgin St, 2nd floor. Registration is required.

The online survey will go live on Thursday as well.

🎓 University of Ottawa

▪️The University of Ottawa has avoided a strike after coming to an agreement with a faculty member union. The Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa announced yesterday that it has made a two-year agreement, subject to a ratification vote by its members. No details were released.
