Here’s something that we should not admit when we are asking for money: we’ll keep publishing the ottawan even if we never see a dime from anyone.

In fact, as much as we like you, gentle reader, we publish the ottawan to find the answer to our own questions: What should we do this weekend? Why is the O Train so dysfunctional? Who’s in charge? When will we see some change? How did any of this happen? Where can we get a really good pizza?

We ask ourselves these questions every day, and every day we try again to answer them, especially the one about pizza. 

Since we launched in April 2020, we’ve published our Ottawa-Gatineau Craft Brewery Map, given out the Best of Ottawa Awards, and emailed out approximately 1,000 newsletters. And we’re just getting started. You're going to love our new and improved events calendar, for one thing (coming soon!).

But for now, we’re asking if you can help out by signing up as a supporting member of the ottawan.

• – The Systems and Computer Engineering professor at Carleton University has been named a fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association. The Association gathers 1,500 scientists in different disciplines to work on artificial intelligence in computing, communication, power, medicine, transportation, agriculture, education, and more. (Carleton University)

🚊 OC Transpo

•  The head of OC Transpo says $1 million per month shortfall is ‘not a huge concern’ . Renee Amilcar says that she hopes that higher levels of government will help out, as the agency has little money in its reserves. Amilcar does not favour a hybrid monthly transit pass for workers who only use transit a few days per week. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC)

✈️ Ottawa International Airport

•  The chief executive officer of Porter Airlines hints at new routes to California, the west coast of Florida, Las Vegas, and the Caribbean. While making no promises or giving dates, Michael Deluce says the airline will be adding new markets over the next six to 24 months. Deluce says Ottawa is his second favourite airport after his airline’s original home, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. (David Sali in the Ottawa Business Journal)

🚨 Ottawa Police Service

•  An Ottawa constable who pleaded guilty to drunk driving in Gatineau has been charged with discreditable conduct under the Police Service Act. The constable led a high speed chase from Highway 5 in Gatineau across the bridge to a University of Ottawa parking lot. Arrested at gunpoint, the constable had twice the legal amount of alcohol and was fined $1,000. His lawyer said the fine was unfair as the constable struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder. (Marlo Glass in the Ottawa Citizen) 

📎 Federal Public Employees

•  The president of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada says that she has been suspended from her position. Jennifer Carr says that as of Wednesday night, she ‘had been stripped of all duties and access to the union’s network, building and staff’. The Institute says Carr is on leave and vice-president Eva Henshaw is the acting president. Neither Carr nor the Institute has said what happened or who made the decision.   ➕ Related The Union of Taxation Employees is recommending to Canada Revenue Agency call centre workers to file grievances if they are being asked to work outside the hours stated in the collective agreement.

🏘️ House Prices

•  Royal LePage says house prices in Ottawa will increase by 4 per cent by the end of the year. The real estate agency’s House Price Survey figures that the average house price will increase $34,000 to $788,662.  (Josh Pringle at CTV) (The Report)

📚 Ottawa Public Library

•  Part of a $750,000 donation will fund the restoration of a stained glass window from the original 1906 Carnegie-funded library. The Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association made the donation, which will be used to restore and install several public art pieces held by the Library into the new new central library and joint facility with Library and Archives Canada, Ādisōke. • In its ninth year, the 2024 Common Markets Spring edition once again takes over the lobby spaces of the National Arts Centre for one day only.
