The Ottawa Business Journal is opening nominations for its annual Forty under 40 awards tomorrow. 

After 27 years, the Journal has recognized over 900 business leaders, most of whom have now shot past 40. Remind us sometime in the future that there is a glaring opportunity for an ottawan Forty over 40 awards.

Back to the Journal, nominees should:

  • Be 39 years or younger on June 30, 2024;
  • Spend the majority of their work time in Ottawa-Gatineau;
  • Be an owner, executive, manager, professional or person with significant business decision-making authority.

      • – The number of first-time species of birds found in the annual bird count. Making a winter visit to Ottawa were a Hooded Merganser in the Stittsville area, a Gray Catbird in Bells Corners, a Red-breasted Mergansers on the Rideau River, and a Peregrine Falcon in Richmond.       WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

      🌬️ Ottawa River

      •  Man runs out of road and drives onto the Ottawa River. Dunrobin Road is a fairly major road that cuts across West Carleton and most traffic heading west turns off at Galetta Side Road. But for the unwary, driving at dusk in January, Dunrobin Road continues on merrily for another mile or so until it ends with dunk into the Ottawa River. We know this spot and it's nighmare fuel. In this case, the car broke through the ice but the driver was guided to safety by a bystander.

      •  Former City Councillor fesses up to vandalizing advertising at Brewer Arena. David Chernushenko, who served on Council from 2010 to 2018, did not like a board ad from Climate Action Canada which read ‘Canadian Oil and Natural Gas is Part of the Solution’. Chernushenko altered it to ‘Oil and Fossil Gas is the Problem’, later, noticing it was peeling, he tugged the ad and it tore. Chernushenko paid the City $203.40 for his efforts.       Randy Boswell in the Ottawa Citizen has a long read on the no-win situation of the Alexandra Bridge.

      The National Capital Commission wants to replace it, but the rebuild team will need to consider 12 points including ‘1. Celebrate the engineering marvel that the original, 122-year-old structure represents, 2. Advance the cause of Indigenous reconciliation, and 3. Include features to commemorate a dark moment in the LGBTQ2+ history of Canada’.

      Others argue that it's crazy to replace an icon and the existing bridge should be renovated for transit and pedestrian use.
