HELLO TUESDAY

Our Craft Brewery Map has been a vital resource during the pestilence. It's proof that Ottawa has a craft brewing scene that is the envy of Canada.

But craft distillers are also making their names known, and the Ottawa Valley is home to some of the most interesting and innovative.

And here is a remarkable thing: craft gin, vodka, and rye is basically the same price as the imported stuff. The usual Canadian-made mark-up doesn't apply.

So while you are at the cottage, on the porch, or hanging out the window, here are the local spirits to raise yours.

North of 7 Distillery

The granny of Ottawa craft distilleries, with a heritage that goes back to 2014. North of 7 distills rye – made with Ontario heritage purple corn, gin, vodka, and rum – with a portion of each rum sale going to support leatherback turtles.

Dairy Distillery

Dairy Distillery in Almonte makes vodka (or Vodkow as they call it.) Usually, vodka is flavourless but Vodkow is made from milk sugars, a byproduct of the dairy process, which adds a gentle tasty non-milky tang. And the bottles all resemble old-timey milk bottles.

Top Shelf Distillers

Perth's Top Shelf Distillers makes gin, vodka, mint liqueur, plus moonshine in flavours like gingerbread, irish cream, blueberry, butter tart, and Tom Green.

Top Shelf

King’s Lock Craft Distillery

A fully organic craft distillery, King's Lock specializes in gin, rye, rum, and moonshine. And, we're a little late on this, a kosher moonshine for Passover. King‘s Lock is located in Johnstown, which is at the end of the 416 on the St. Laurence.

Artist In Residence Distillerie

This Gatineau distillery brings vodka, rye, amaretto, dry gin, flavoured gins, chocolate crème de menthe, liqueuers, and orange bitters. But you'll only find them in the SAQs, LCBO isn't carrying them.

Artist In Residence

O’Kenny Craft Spirits

Andrew Kenny is a Renfrew County farmer who has decided that distilling would be a welcome addition to his cows. O’Kenny Craft Spirits distills vodka, rye whiskey, and rhiskey – a 50:50 concoction of rum and whiskey.

All of these distillers also make hand sanitisers as well. And these days, that's probably the most profitable part of their businesses.

The other two Ottawa distillers to be aware of: Dunrobin Distilleries, which has postponed their first spirits to make hand sanitiser, and Twelve Barrels, which is an Ottawa repackager of other distillers’ rye.

Wednesday is our weekly resto roundup – reply to us at hello@theottawan.com with your suggestions.

We'll see you tomorrow, Martha and Darren
