| | WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL | No more meetings this week. | Agenda | | WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT | 🚌 OC Transpo | ▪️Para Transpo riders are being forced into lengthy wait times as OC Transpo catches up on minibus repairs. Ottawa's manager of transit services Renée Amilcar says ‘[t]hese older vehicles require additional repairs that are often more complex and take longer to complete’. Demonstrating the farsightedness for which OC Transpo is famous, Amilcar said ‘a vehicle replacement program was postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic due to low ridership’. | | CBC |
|
| ▪️Transit will be free for all ticket holders and volunteers of the World Junior Hockey Championship. Eligible riders can use any mode of OC Transpo at no charge three hours before and three hours after a game. This includes ParaTranpo, although it still requires booking 24 hours beforehand. The Juniors run from December 26 to January 5. | | Natasha O’Neill at CityNews |

| 🗞️ Indian Time | ▪️The weekly newspaper for Akwesasne, Indian Time, has published its final edition. The reasons for the closing of the 42 year-old paper are the usual: declining sales and ad revenue. Staff have worked without pay since June in an attempt to save it. Akwesasne, which considers itself as one First Nation, inconveniently has the Canada – US border bisecting it. | | Jorge Barrera at CBC |

| | 🛬 Air Travel | ▪️A Porter Airlines flight from Ottawa to Toronto landed safely after sending out a ‘mayday’ call. Flight 2704 declared the ‘mayday’ after sensors reported smoke in the cabin, although no smoke was seen by the crew. No one was injured. | | Bryann Aguilar at CityNews |

| | OTTAWA HISTORIC LOGO T-SHIRTS | An Ottawa Historic Logo t-shirt would probably make a terrific Christmas or Hanukkah gift – but it’s too late.
You can order if you like – we’d never say no to a sale – but the chances of the t-shirt making it to you before Dec 23 is pretty much none. | It’s a great way to ring in the New Year, though, after New Year’s Day. There is no way one would arrive before then at this point. | | Ottawa Valley Ale |

| Ottawa Valley Ale T-Shirt | Long forgotten, but Ottawa’s first craft brewery was Ottawa Valley Ale, incorporated in 1985. | Help support THE OTTAWAN by buying one of our historic logo t-shirts. | |

| | BUT, ONE MORE THING … | In the past year, THE OTTAWAN has mentioned three cold cases that were solved by the Ottawa-area police using investigative genetic genealogy. Often police have DNA of a suspect but are stymied if the suspect has never been entered into a DNA database. Investigative genetic genealogy uses commercial DNA databases to find someone who is genetically a relative, then use traditional police work to follow the family tree to someone who is a plausible suspect. Kristy Nease at CBC has a longread on how this technique came to be used in Ottawa, its successes, and also the implications for employing it, considering Canada’s lack of laws governing its use. |
