HELLO OTTAWA

🚊 NO Train: Day 0️⃣ continues

Here are today’s updates on the O Train.

  •  The Confederation Line continues to run a limited, single-carriage service on the full line.
  •  The O Train has been cut back to every 15 minutes as crews make new track adjustments on the eastern section of the system. Trains between Hurdman, Lees, and uOttawa stations will run on a single track only. The R1 Shuttle has been increased to every five minutes to help compensate. (Josh Pringle at CTV).
  •  Para Transpo will take same day requests for trips between Line 1 stations; customers should call 613 560 5000 to book the service. (OC Transpo)

    🍫 Smiths Falls

    •  The Hershey company has bought back its old building in Smiths Falls. Hershey infamously abandoned the city in 2008 after 46 years in the location. Cannabis company Canopy bought the building in 2017 but shut down operations in it earlier this year. It’s unknown what Hershey’s plans are. (Michelle Allan at CBC)

    •  In honour of Black Cat Appreciation Day, the ottawan’s resident felines Bodie and Wiggy have taken over our Instagram account. Please note, however, that neither cat is 100% black. In fact, Bodie is actually a rich dark brown colour*, and Wigmore possesses a fine black and white Tuxedo pattern. *In our defence, we adopted the cats on a dark, late February afternoon in London UK's East end, and they were living in a rooftop shelter, and in that dim light Bodie appeared black as a chimney sweep's cheeks.
    •  The Merry Dairy pops up at Morgan’s Grant from 3:30 pm to 4:15 pm and at Glen Cairn in Kanata from 5:00 to 6:30.
    •  Ottawa Music Industry Coalition, Music.Art.Ppl., and In the Glebe BIA present the Lansdowne Park Summer Showcase featuring DJ Furrit, DJ Pithra, Kina Ink, and Ottawa Shufflers Community. 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
    •  A Company of Fools' production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet plays parks and venues around Ottawa this summer. Tonight’s venue is at Weston Park in Alta Vista. 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

    Tomorrow 

    •  McGregor’s Orchard is now open for the season. Pick your own Zinnias, buy lavender products from the farm store, and there may be some early Paula Red apples available.
    •  Ottawa Greek Fest continues with lunch served between noon and 2:00 pm and the evening’s programming starting at 5:00 pm.
    •  The town of Pakenham’s Come Home to Pakenham Festival opens Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm with a beer festival. Enjoy the fine beers, ciders, and spirits of Dairy Distllery (makers of Vodkow), Farmgate Cider, Cartwright Springs, Ridge Rock Brewing Co., Kin Vineyards and Cold Bear Brewing Co. Stewart Community Centre, 112 MacFarlane St, Pakenham.
    •  Be immersed in Celtic soundscapes at Art House café. This evening’s Celtic Illusions show combines electric instruments with traditional music. $15 at the door.
    •  A Company of Fools' production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet plays parks and venues around Ottawa this summer. Tonight’s venue is at Walter Baker Park in Kanata. 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
    •  Dance all night to Progressive House music at Berlin, inside 56 ByWard Market Square.
    •  If you prefer to dance the hits and the hits only, you’ll need to be at House of TARG where DJ Remi Royal promises to spin them all, from the 1950s right through to today. The Summer Hits Dance Party costs $5 at the door. Bring money for the 30+ pinball machines and perogies.

    We don’t know who needs to hear this but apparently there’s a $5 bin of 1950s wedding dresses at Darling Vintage.

    If you have been reading the ottawan long enough, you’ll have noticed two of our obessions: ferries and roadtrips. We can finally combine the two with news that there is a brand new ferry on the route between Kingston and Wolfe Island, the Wolfe Islander IV. The new ferry is in trials and should be in service in a fortnight. A free one-way trip is about 20 minutes.
