    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    🏒 Women’s Professional Hockey League

    •  The inaugural game of Ottawa’s Women’s Professional Hockey League team will be against Montréal on Jan 2 at TD Place. The first ever match in the league will be Toronto playing host to New York on New Year’s Day. The names of the teams have not yet been announced. (Karissa Donkin at CBC)

    🚬  Ottawa Public Health

    •  Ottawa Public Health is asking the Federal government to ban the purchase of cigarettes for anyone born after 2008. Inspired by a New Zealand law, cigarettes would remain legal to purchase for everyone who is currently 16 years of age or older. For those who are currently banned from purchasing cigarettes by age, this will continue, year by year, until there is no one left alive of smoking age. New Zealand is in the process of revoking the law. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC)

    ⚒️ Kìwekì Point Park

    •  The statues of Kichi Zibi Innini and Samuel de Champlain have been reinstalled by the National Capital Commission. The two statues had long been placed together at Nepean Point park. Now after a $6.7-million renovation, the park is now known as Kìwekì Point Park, the statue once only known as ‘Anishinabe Scout’ has been deemed Kichi Zibi Innini – Great River Man in the Algonquin language – and both statues get pride of place on a gorgeous new plateau overlooking the river. (Randy Boswell in the Ottawa Citizen)

    🛻 Convoy News

Convoy co-organizers Tamara Lich and Chris Barber are currently on trial for mischief and intimidation, amongst other things, over the Convoy occupation.

    •  It’s the lawyer for Chris Barber’s turn to make an opening statement. She says ‘There is absolutely nothing wrong with people saying they're going to protest until they get what they want. They can stay six months if they do it peacefully, lawfully’. (Canadian Press)
    •  Barber’s lawyer also presented text messages and social media posts of police assisting the Convoy. (David Fraser at CBC
    •  The Ottawa Citizen is live blogging the trial.
