The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

It’s Monday, October 17, 2022 and OMG compiling the winners of the the ottawan Best of Ottawa 2022 Awards was a time sinker! That's what we get for allowing write-in votes this year.

But it's done. And it's here. Behold:

Award Winners list.

Congratulations to the winners!  We thank everyone who took the time to nominate and vote for their favourite Ottawa businesses and personalities. Please do your social media duties and let the world know about these fantastic people, businesses, and campaigns from Ottawa and area.

Last year, a reader asked if we could print all the nominations because it makes a great research list. We agree, and we'll do that. But not today. It's time for bed.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

? The Emergency Act Inquiry

▪️The president of the Ottawa-Gatineau Hotel Association told the Mayor’s office before the Convoy arrived that truckers were booking rooms for at least 30 days. The City had previously expressed surprise that the Trucker Convoy did not intend to stay for a weekend.

▪️City manager Steve Kanellakos – who was assured by Ottawa Police that the Convoy would leave after the first weekend – testified that the City, Police, and Convoy were working on a deal to move trucks into the Wellington Street area. Before the deal was finalized,, Ottawa Police permitted 40 more trucks on Wellington. The deal then fell apart.

▪️People have been using the Freedom of Information Act in an attempt to find the badge numbers of Mounties who helped roust the Convoy, which creates quite the philisophical pickle for those who support both transparency and anti-harrassment. The Mounties declined to provide the info.

The Rest

▪️Nokia is planning on spending $340 million to transform its Kanata campus. We wrote about this before – but things are moving now. The Federal government is putting in $40 million, Ontario is handing over $30 million, and the City found $2 million under the cushions. The new campus will be a mixed-use, with residential and shopping components. [Ottawa Citizen

▪️Neighbours are trying again to stop the development of a medical boarding home for Inuit. The Larga Baffin is a planned 350 bed faciility for people from Nunuvut who come to Ottawa for medical treatment. Some neighbours have opposed the plan, with the latest attempt being an appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal by the Upper Hunt Club Community Association. [Ottawa Citizen

▪️Flair Airlines is starting flights between Ottawa and Thunder Bay.  Flights will be twice a week, starting next June. [TB Newswatch]
