Storm Resources

43,000 homes are still without power but Hydro Ottawa says most will be powered up by tomorrow.

The City is offering emergency assistance financial aid for food, and if you can convince the bureaucrats, medicine, due to the storm. Click here for the online application or call 311.  

Many of the City's recovery centres are open today until 10 pm if you are in need of  water, a shower, a phone charging, or someplace else. The City's storm recovery page is here.
 

The Weekend Starts Now

▪️Runners participating in the Tamarack Race Weekend may pick up their Race Kits from 4:00pm to 8:00pm today, and from 10:00am to 8:00pm Friday, and from 9:00am to 6:00pm Saturday. 

▪️Tonight only (May 26) The Paddling Film Festival at the ByTowne Cinema. 

▪️Due to the rainy weather today, Meatings’ 10 Year Anniversary party tonight has moved to their Sensplex East location, 813 Shefford Road (two minutes from the Canotek Road location). Saturday

▪️This Saturday May 28th head to the 4th Annual Glebe Garage Sale, where you’ll find crafts, baking, and cool organizations like the Cat Rescue Network. From 8:0am to 3:00pm, rain or shine. Headquartered at 225 First Avenue, you’ll find participating homes and businesses selling on lawns and driveways and from porches. 

▪️Ottawa Street Markets will be at Carlington Coffee House from 10:00am to 2:00pm, with a Pop Up Market featuring fresh greenhouse tomatoes and peppers, asparagus, candles, honey, and local apples. Nat’s Bread will also be there. /


Sunday

▪️Preston Street Market and Free Wheeling Craft launch a season of Sunday events this week. Visit over 25 vendors from 9:00am to 3:00pm, and enjoy family friendly activities. This Sunday May 29th the market welcomes family yoga and colouring for the kids. 333 Preston Street (behind Pure Kitchen). 

▪️Square Lemon presents the Blossoming Creatives Craft Market at the Glebe Community Centre from 10:30am to 3:00pm. Visit more than 40 local makers and take part in the onsite workshop. 175 Third Avenue.

COVID-19 NEWS

⭕ Some tools used by Canadian kids for their online learning classes collected data for marketing use. [Globe & Mail]

⭕ Pfizer will sell its COVID 19 vaccine to the world's 45 poorest countries, albeit at a 'not-for-profit' price. Pfizer made a US $22 billion profit in 2021, up from US $9 billion in 2020.  [Globe & Mail]

⭕ Quebec will start vaccinating people with the smallpox vaccine as a prevention against MonkeyPox. The vaccines will be offered to high-risk people, which are generally people who have been in contact with confirmed cases. [CBC]

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️At least five people in the area have died as a result of last week's storm. Four were struck by falling trees, one woman in Gatineau drowned after her boat capsized. [Ottawa Citizen

▪️The Saint-Hugues Parish church in Cumberland lost its steeple in the storm. The 127 year-old church also lost its 17-metre steeple during a 2011 storm, which cost $300,000 to replace. [Ottawa Citizen

▪️The Ottawa Humane Society is still out of of power, and has spent $15,000 in emergency costs. The Humane Society is still provinding essential services but has put a call out for donations. [Ottawa Citizen] [Donations]
