Ottawa Public Health has introduced a new free, online training course teaching people how to prevent and treat drug overdoses.

Dr Vera Etches says Overdose Prevention and Response Training is ‘a self-directed, 20-minute course online and it's mainly targeted to people who are school staff, business owners who are wondering what to do, health-care professionals and community and social services staff who interact with people who may need more support’. But it's open to anyone who wants to know.

🏘️ Housing

•  The City is receiving $176 million from the Federal government for 4,400 homes over three years. The deal expects that the City will change zoning rules to allow four units on all serviced lots, something that will require a bylaw change. Additionally, the deal expects that zoning around transit hubs and major corridors will be changed to permit taller buildings. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says that any bylaw change will ‘not be fast tracked’. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC)
  
  ➕ Related New data from the City shows that housing starts decreased 39.2 per cent in 2023 and office vacancies increased two per cent to 12.6 per cent.

🖥️ Federal Public Service

•  A hacker has accessed data from the insurance provider of Federal Public Service workers deployed overseas. MSH international Canada discovered the cybersecurity incident last Friday but as yet does not know what information may have been seen. Overseas workers may have delays in claims as the webpage for the insurance provider remains offline. (Safiyah Marhnouj at CBC)

🚨 Ottawa Police Service

•  The Ottawa Police Service says hate crimes have risen from 377 in 2022 to 460 incidents in 2023. The Service reports the that groups most victimized were:
•  Jewish (92 reported incidents)
•  LGBTQ2+ (65 reported incidents)
•  Black (59 reported incidents)
•  Muslim (21 reported incidents)
•  India, Pakistan/South Asian (19 reported incidents)
•  Chinese (15 reported incidents)

  ➕ Related Ottawa Police say several people were arrested over the weekend for taking part in a Tik Tok challenge, shooting Orbeez gel balls at passers-by. Orbeez are usually used as beads for vases or aerating plants but their softness and squishiness make them popular as ammunition in toy guns.
