HELLO OTTAWA

  • The City is doing a comprehesive review of the Parks & Facilities By-law, something that – other than some 2021 tinkering – hasn't been looked at since 2004.

  • The City points out that the review is to reflect evolving community needs but that it cannot conflict with these bylaws:

  •

  • • Animal Care and Control By-law No. 2003-077
  • • E-Scooter By-law No. 2002-174
  • • Film By-law No. 2020-164
  • • Noise By-law No. 2017-255
  • • Open Air Fire By-law 2004-163
  • • Smoking and Vaping By-law No. 2019-241
  • • Solid Waste Management By-law No. 2019-241
  • • Special Events By-law 2013-232
  • • Municipal Alcohol Policy

That last one is going to be the kicker. Does Ottawa join the rest of Canada’s big cities and allow the drinking of alcohol in its parks, or does it kick the can down the road for another generation.

  • The survey is here.

  • There will also be open houses over the next month:

  • • Claudette Cain Park - 660 River Road, Gloucester, July 11 from 3:30 to 6:00 pm
  • • Walter Baker Park - 100 Charlie Rogers Place, Kanata, July 15 from 3:30 to 7:00 pm
  • • Andrew Haydon Park - 3127 Carling Avenue, Nepean, July 17 from 11:30 to 2:00 pm
  • • Millennium Sports Park - 100 Millennium Boulevard, Cumberland | July 23 from 11:30 to 2:00 pm
  • • Bearbrook Park - 99 Bearbrook Road, Gloucester, July 25 from 12:30 to 3:00 pm
  • • McCarthy Park – 3320 Paul Anka Drive, July 25 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm
  • • Rooney Park - 15 Steeple Hill Crescent, Nepean, July 29 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 PM
  • • McNabb Park – 435 Bronson Avenue, July 31 from 11:30 to 2:00 pm

Corrections

  • There were some errors in yesterday’s Pick Your Own Raspberry article:

  •  The link to Shouldice Farm was incorrect. However, Shouldice Farm is not offering Pick Your Own Raspberries this year.

  •  Avonmore Berry Farm is not offering Pick Your Own Raspberries this year, either.

Thank you to reader Scott N for the info.

Number

  • $80,000
  • – The cost of a new powerful ventilation system that has been installed at the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre safe consumption site. The Centre was closed four months ago after staff complained of headaches, which were attributed to emissions from drugs that users were heating before injecting. The Centre will reopen next month. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC)

Ottawan of the Day

  • Patricia Warden
  • – The 49 year-old had an itchy left hand when she checked her Lotto Max ticket. It was worth $70 million.  The ticket was purchased at Mr. Gas on Ogilvie Road. (Ryan Roca at Global News

Quote

  • Shelly, she, offered me a tent, so I kind of took up that offer, and that’s where my home is right now

  • – Paul, who has set up a tent next to the encampment of people who want the University of Ottawa to disclose any investments connected to Israel. Paul is one of a dozen people who have set up tents to live due to the lack of shelter and found that they probably won’t be moved from this spot. (William Eltherington and Jackie Perez at CTV)

📋 Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

⁉️ Wedding Shooting

  • The groom at the Infinity Convention Centre wedding that had the massive gunfire last summer was killed last Friday. The man was parked in front of the Fat Bastard’s burritos at Carling and Kirkwood avenues when he was shot point blank at around 6:00 pm. At the wedding last year, the man was unharmed. Multiple gunmen shot more than 50 rounds at the 200 person wedding, killing two and wounding six. (Shaamini Yogaretnam at CBC)

🏨 McGee’s Inn

  • McGee's Inn, a 138 year-old building on Daly Avenue, is for sale for $5.9 million. Built for 1882 clerk of the privy council John McGee, the mansion has been an inn since 1984. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

🚊 O Train

  • Some facts have come out about the multi-million dollar settlement by the City over the O Train construction. We know now that the issue is over the construction of the eastern and western extensions of the Confederation line and the newly expanded north-south Trillium line. Previously, there was no indication what it was for. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe has also said that the costs may be pandemic related. We still don’t know how much the costs are or to whom they are owed. (Elyse Skura at CBC)

⛳ Buckingham Golf Course

  • Two people fleeing from police were arrested when their car got stuck on Buckingham Golf Course. The story doesn’t say if it was a sand trap. The car was chased after if refused to pull over when a Gatineau police officer noticed that it had a different license plate on the front than it did the back. The two were arrested as they attempted to get into a taxi. (William Eltherington at CTV)

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

In New York magazine’s The Cut, writer Michelle Dean writes about how last weekend’s revelation that Alice Munro was aware that her second husband molested her daughter but stayed with him makes sense to her as someone who grew up in the Ottawa Valley in the 80s and 90s, where secrets are ‘it’s just “like this”’.
