HELLO OTTAWA

The worldwide fun run organization Parkrun has a new chapter in Stittsville.

Every Saturday at 9:00 am around the world, Parkrunners jog or walk a 5 km route at their own pace. Times are kept so participants can keep track of their progress but it is not a competition and there is no charge.

The Ottawa-Carleton Trailway Parkrun, the fifth chapter in the Capital, begins May 4th. 

The other local Parkruns are Kanata, Orléans, New York Central (relax, it's in Russell) and Moussette in Gatineau.

💰 Lansdowne 2.0 Audit

•  Ottawa’s Auditor General has announced how she wants to audit the Lansdowne 2.0 plan. First, Nathalie Gougeon does not want to look at the previous deal between the City and Ottawa Sports and Entertainment; she’ll only look at what was approved by Council last November. The first part of the audit will look at ‘proceeds from the sale of air rights, event ticket revenue, sponsorship revenue, retail revenue, parking revenue and property tax uplift and associated project costs including construction costs, operating expenditures and business interruption costs’. It will not consider ‘the non-financial elements of the proposal’. (Auditor General News Release)

💥 Eastway Tank Explosion

•  The trial against Eastway Tank and its owner has been delayed. Six workers at the company were killed after an explosion two years ago. The company and its owner face three charges of not protecting the employees. The trial was to begin next Monday but lawyers agreed to ‘give away’ the dates. While the trial could be rescheduled, this could also mean either a plea deal or a dropping of charges may be in the offing. (Guy Quenneville at CBC)  

🛫 Ottawa International Airport

•  For the first time in five years, Ottawa will have flights to St John’s. Porter announced the new daily Newfoundland route today, which will begin June 6. (Elizabeth Whitten at CBC)

🗳️ Ville de Gatineau

•  The byelection for a new mayor will be June 9. Former mayor France Bélisle resigned last week, stating that ‘she did not want to keep participating in the current political climate and that she had received death threats’. Councillor Daniel Champagne is the acting mayor in the meantime. (CBC)

🚨 Ottawa Police Service Round-up

•  Chief Eric Stubbs blames ‘miscommunication and misinterpretations’ but denies that some groups – like Convoy supporters shooting off fireworks two Saturdays ago – are treated more leniently than others, like Israel / Hamas war ceasefire supporters, who were ticketed for using bullhorns while marching. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC)
•  Body cameras for constables can be expected by the end of this year, or early 2025. (Ted Raymond at CTV)
•  The new-look Ottawa Police cruisers have been shown. New for 2024 design will be dark blue with white doors. There's a photo in the link. The current design – quick, what does an Ottawa Police car look like? – is white with a thick blue stripe lengthwise beneath the door windows. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

📋 Federal Public Service

•  The Public Service Alliance of Canada has filed a grievance against the Treasury Board for the botched change of health benefits administrator. The Federal civil service used to use Sun Life but changed to Canada Life, which has resulted in thousands of complaints over declined benefits or poor service. The Alliance is seeking cash for its members.
•  The Alliance, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, and the Canadian Association of Professional Employees are asking for more compensation over the Phoenix Pay System. While some employees have received $2,500 as compensation for inconveniences 2016 – 2020, the unions say that the problems have continued.
•  The Black Class Action Secretariat has filed a formal complaint to the Canadian Human Rights Commission on behalf of Black employees of the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The Treasury Board has already reported that the Commission disciminated against its own Black and racialized employees.

The Federal government has turned down the Taliban’s request to take control of Afghanistan’s embassy and consulates in Canada. The Taliban wrote to the Canadian government requesting permission to send new consular staff to the Argyle Ave house. The spokesman for Global Affairs said that Canada did not bother to respond. Embassy staff say they have no contact with the Taliban in Kabul and fund their operations with fees for consular services.
