🚊 NO Train: Day 8️⃣

Here are today’s updates on the closure of the Confederation Line.

  •  OC Transpo made a public update this afternoon:

    • 44 of the 45 carriages have been inspected. The uninspected carriage was already out of service and is in Kingston. 

    • Six of the carriages are undergoing further inspection.

    • The axle hub that caused all the hubbub is currently being inspected at the manufacturer in France.

  •  A University of Ottawa software engineering student has created useful maps on what to take to avoid the crowed Rail Replacement R1 buses. (Mario Carlucci at CBC) (The Maps)
  •  The chair of the transit commission says the carriage wheels are wearing out years before they should and are not designed for the system. (Elyse Skura at CBC)

    • Abdulhakim Moalimishak
    • – The president of the Ottawa Islamic Centre and Assalam Mosque has had his organizations’ charity status returned by the Canada Revenue Agency. The Agency had revoked charity status in 2018 after reports that derogatory comments about women, Jewish, and LGBTQ people had appeared at the mosque multiple times between 2009 and 2014. Immediately appealing, Moakimishak says ‘We condemn any type of hate, political, religious, or otherwise. We condemn any type of judgmental or biased understanding of theology.’ (Sarah Kester at CBC)

    🏈 Lansdowne Park

    •  The City says that it has received thousands of responses over Lansdowne 2.0, the plan for the City to fund a redevelopment for the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group. At the instigation of Capital Ward councillor Shawn Mendard (Not Mendes!     🦋 Blue Heron Wetlands

    •  The Blue Heron Wetlands, a 106-acre spanse of nature, has been purchased by the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust. With the wetlands, the Trust now has a 900-acre contiguous stretch of natural lands near Scotch Corners. The new bit is home to diverse range of plant, butterfly, bird, amphibian, reptile, and mammal species, including 16 species at risk. The wetlands are not currently open to the public but a trail and facilities are planned. (Leslie McKay at Stittsville Central)

    ⭐ Sustainable Eastern Ontario

    •  Sustainable Eastern Ontario is opening nominations for its Sustainability Star AwardSuitable nominees would be involved in safeguarding water quality, improving access to sustainable transportation options, protecting nature and biodiversity, sharing knowledge of sustainable living, enhancing food security, promoting renewable energy, finding waste management solutions and developing green businesses and communities.     ⛽ Jerry Cans

    •  Ottawa Police Service is asking the public if they noticed the purchase, or filling, of two gas cans on or before July 19The cans are suspected to have been used in a residential fire on Booth Street that killed a teenager. Anyone with information is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 613 236 1222, extension 5493. (Aedan Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen)

    🛫 Ottawa International Airport

    •  Porter Airlines has announced a new Ottawa – Edmonton routeThe daily roundtrips will begin on Oct 4th, leaving Ottawa in the evening and returning in the morning. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

    👣 Lac des Pères

    •  A fisherman caught a human foot in Lac des PèresThe lake is in Sainte-Thérèse de la Gatineau, 20 km south of Maniwaki. The Sûreté du Québec has sent in divers. (CBC)
