HELLO OTTAWA | → The National Capital Commission has approved two new monuments | → Dress up for the Ottawa ComicCon Winter Edition tomorrow and Sunday | → The City’s plan to buy a farm near Fitzroy Harbour is for the birds. And fish. | → Deal of the day: Art books are on sale for $5 and $10 at Barely Bruised Books | → 🌞 High -6° Low -4° and sunny | – Martha and Darren | | STATISTICS OTTAWA | | 190 | The age in years of a cabin on a 223-acre waterfront property near Fitzroy Harbour, which the City is considering buying as a conservation area. The 1835 farm has ‘high value as a wildlife and aquatic habitat, the meadows can be planted with trees, and there’s a high potential for Indigenous archaeological sites given its proximity to other sites in the area’. However, rural City councillors are miffed that the question on whether to spend $2 million on the property was brought up at the finance and corporate services committee rather than the rural affairs committee, which doesn't like the idea. City Council will decide January 29. | | Elyse Skura at CBC |

| | | WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT | ⛏️ Monuments | ▪️Monuments honouring survivors of Residential Schools and for paramedics have been approved the National Capital Commission. Canada’s Indian Residential Schools National Monument will be placed on the western terrace of Parliament Hill after a redevelopment. The space is currently a parking lot, and a statue of Robert Borden will need to be moved. A monument honouring survivors of Residential Schools was one of the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The national monument celebrating paramedics and honouring those who fell in the line of duty will be placed at Commissioner’s Park at Dow’s Lake. | | Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen |

| ⚡ Battery Energy Storage Systems | ▪️The City’s Rural Affairs Committee has come up with some rules for Battery Energy Storage Systems. These systems are companies that buy electricity from Hydro One when it is cheap at night, store it in a set of batteries, then sell it back to Hydro One during the day when it is expensive. Two companies had planned to set up systems in rural Ottawa but their plans were put on hold after worried neighbours complained to their ward councillors. The new rules say that systems should follow Hydro One’s Fire Protection Risk & Response Assessment Standard for distance away from neighbouring buildings and that Ottawa Fire Services be satisfied that effective fire and safety risk management is in place. | | Ted Raymond at CTV |

| ➕ Related There will be a launch and presentation of the latest Dunsky Energy report giving an outlook for the Ottawa region regarding Battery Energy Storage Systems followed by a panel discussion next Thursday, January 30 at 11:30 am in Kanata. | 🛻 Convoy News | ▪️Planners for an ‘Election Convoy’ were denied access to the Antrim Truck Stop in Arnprior by the owner. The Election Convoy wants a Federal election called and planned to do a ’slow roll‘ through downtown Ottawa to make their point. One date planned was tomorrow, January 25. While the Antrim Truck had been used several times in the past for Convoy and Convoy-adjacent meetings, the owners are no longer interested in providing the meeting space. Antrim Truck Stop has a great restaurant but it really should be known for its Big Rigs Bakery. | | Luke LeBrun in Convoywatch |

| | BUT, ONE MORE THING … | While the demand for the ‘Canada is not for sale’ baseball caps and toques is going through the roof, none of them are made in Canada. The items were designed in Ottawa and are embroidered in Toronto, but the caps are manufactured in Vietnam, Bangladesh, and China and the toques are made in the United States. Aside from military, firefighter, and extreme weather uniforms, Canada has not had a significant textile industry since the 1980s. ➕ Related On the other hand, in case you missed our Drinking and Dining update on Wednesday, Stubbe Chocolates’ “Canada is Not For Sale” bars are made in Ottawa. |
