Here are today’s updates on the closure of the Confederation Line.

  •  OC Transpo general manager Renee Amilcar has a message for riders: ‘Please come back and try us; give us, again, a chance’. (Josh Pringle at CTV)
  •  Josipa Petrunić, president and CEO of Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium, says OC Transpo needs to treat ‘riders like really amazing customers’ and when service that they have paid for has failed, the appropriate thing to do is ‘to give them free rides’. (CBC)
  •  A letter writer to the Ottawa Sun accuses the OC Transpo of running a Soviet-style service. Whatever you may think of the Soviet Union and their way of running things, the Moscow subway was and is a wonderous thing. We’d be lucky to have a Soviet-style subway. (Ottawa Sun)

    •  The Ottawa Airport has finally received the trusted-traveller programmeEligible travellers – those with Nexus or Global Entry cards, police, military, air crews, and airport personnel – can use the new faster security procedues, such as keeping your belt and shoes on and not removing your laptop.     ☮️ National Peacekeepers Day

    •  Today is National Peace Keepers DayThe City has lowered all flags to half mast from sunrise until sunset to commemerate all Canadian peacekeepers who have served or who are currently serving in peacekeeping operations around the world. (City of Ottawa)

    •  Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival (until August 13) screens films across genres and lengths from Indigenous filmmakers from around the world. The screenings, plus curated art exhibits, workshops and panels, and music performances, will happen at the Ottawa Art Gallery, Club SAW, Gallery 101, and Berlin Nightclub. Tickets can be purchased for individual screenings and full days of programming.
    •  The Metcalfe Farmers Market Night Markets returns from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm this evening. We have it on hood authority that there will be very fancy cupcakes. Metcalfe Fairgrounds, 2821 8th Line Road, Metcalfe.
    •  Spark Beer’s Happy Hour gets you 20% off beer and pizza, between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm Wednesday through Friday.
    •  Doug Stewart and the Keystrings are the latest Ottawa talent to take the WelliWednesday stage at Parkdale Park. Bring your own blanket. 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

    •  Get the weekend started early by visiting the Navan Fair, running until Sunday at 1279 Colonial Road. This fair started in 1946, so they know a thing or two about countrified good fun for the whole fam. The gates open at 4:00 pm today and the fair runs through Sunday.

    •  Ottawa Greek Festival stretches across two weekends, bringing delicious food, entertainment and shopping to the Hellenic Event Centre (1315 Prince of Wales Dr).

    Just Announced / Now Booking

    •  We've noticed the resurgence of smocking in summer 2023 womenswear, but have you ever wondered how that effect is achieved? Watch the pros in action at Mississippi Mills Textile Museum’s Fibrefest, running September 9 and 10 in Almonte. In addition to smocking, there will be demos in textile disciplines like quilting, rug-hooking, weaving, knitting, and lacemaking. There will be workshops as well, but you’ll have to check the MMTM’s socials for registration details. Tickets to the festival cost a reasonable $8 per day.
    •  Canadian authors Kai Thomas, Elizabeth Hay, and Roy MacGregor will all appear at the Read for the Cure fundraiser on November 21. The 16th annual literary fundraiser is presented by the Cancer Research Society and Penguin Random House, and tickets are now on sale at $135 per person.

    We have only one road trip worthy of mentioning this week – and that’s the Sheep Dog Trials Festival in Kingston. According to Ottawa Road Trips, it is the ‘Olympics of sheep herding’.
