HELLO OTTAWA

Reader Cindy wrote in to correctly chastise us for our incorrect spelling of ‘Department of Defence’. We spelt it the American way yesterday, defense.

the ottawan uses Canadian spellings but sometimes, man, Canadian spellings can do a number on your head. Honour, not honor but use honorary. Analyse not analyze but A to Zed. Then we have words like traveller. Or is it traveler? Traveller is more fussy, so it is probably the right one.

Of our own volition, we respect French accents on names like Québec or Orléans but then write Gatineau transit authority rather than la Société de transport de l'Outaouais just so readers understand what we are talking about.

Then there is the Ottawa Valley accent and vocabulary. But we’ll give ‘er a go some other day before puttin' er in the rhubarb.

    🌬️ Derecho Storm

    • The City has received its own review of the City’s response to the May 2022 derecho storm – and they think they did just swell. The City found it ‘conducted a well-coordinated response’, ‘has staff with the knowledge and skills’, ‘mobilized quickly and efficiently, and secured additional support early on’, and ‘focused on helping residents in need and providing community supports’ amongst the other good things. (City of Ottawa) (The Review PDF)

    🖊️ Forging on

    • A consultant hired by the Ottawa Police Service has had his forgery charge withdrawn. The consultant had requested funding for a group he co-founded, the African Canadian Association of Ottawa, in a letter using the name and signature of a director at the Somerset West Community Health Centre. In exchange for withdrawing charges, the consultant has completed a diversion progamme, including 75 charitable hours and a written letter of apology. The consultant’s company had been hired to help hire the new police chief.     🪑 Take a Seat

    • Five Gatineau and one Luskville resident who styled themselves as paedophile hunters were themselves arrested by the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau. Like the old TV show To Catch a Predator, the six would create fake online profiles in hope of luring creeps to a meeting, recording the session, then publicly shame them. The charges range from forcible confinement to inimidation to distributing child pornography. (CBC)

      ➕ Related The CBC named the six people charged in their story, the Ottawa Citizen did not and wrote this in their version: ‘People facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty. It’s our policy not to name those charged unless we plan to follow the case through the justice system or it’s of significant public interest to identify them.’ We've never seen that kind of statement before.

    🏠 Property

    • Tired of articles about how people found a way to buy a house that turns out to be some form of "their parents give them the money"? Finally we have a reproducable plan. A retired couple with a 50 acre property in Lombardy – south of Ottawa – sold their daughter their house under value at $300,000 then bought a mobile home for $275,000, which was installed on the acreage. Wait, that’s the same thing after all. (Cathy Rivoire in Maclean’s)

    • Decolonial Solidarity Ottawa-Gatineau is marking "Fossil Fools Day" with an action to protest RBC’s policies which have “failed to respect Indigenous sovereignty, and are fuelling the climate crisis.” The protest will start at 2 pm outside RBC at 99 Bank St. 
    • The Desert Island Big Band, led by Ottawan Stefan Jurewicz, hits the Stray Dog taproom. Influences include The Kills, David Bowie, and St. Vincent. With guest Dan Kelly. Tickets $10. 501 Lacolle Way, Unit 4, Orléans.
