WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
💰 ByWard Market |
▪️The Province has clarified that Ottawa will get $20 million to create, amongst other things, a ‘cultural and entertainment district’. Premier Doug Ford and Mayor Mark Sutcliffe announced a $197 million Ontario – Ottawa deal last March but provided few details. Yesterday, the City said $11.8 million of the money will also be dedicated to ByWard Market improvements, including transforming ByWard Market Square into pedestrians-only during the summer and making William Street pedestrian-only year round. | | Josh Pringle at CTV |
📮 Christmas Cards |
▪️Mayor Mark Sutcliffe wants to send you a Christmas card. This is on his personal website and not through the City. We’re iffy on the rules of polite society, but this probably means you need to send him one. If you do sign up, you’ll be added to his newsletter but you can always click unsubscribe. | | Request a card here |

💸 Ottawa Schools |
▪️The Ottawa Student Transportation Authority says it will be short $4.6 million if the City raises student fares. While the Authority provides bus service to 76,000 students, it also hands out bus passes to 20,000 students. As the Authority has already received its funding for the year, the increased cost of bus passes will come directly from existing funds. | | Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen |
▪️The City’s Finance and Corporate Services Committee has approved selling land in Little Italy for a new French-language school. The parcel near the planned Corso Italia O Train station would then have a park, recreation centre, and housing as well as a Conseil des Écoles Publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario school. | | Elyse Skura at CBC |
🚗 Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital |
▪️The new Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital won’t have enough parking spaces, says neighbourhood group. While the new Campus is planned to have 3,000 parking spaces, the Civic Hospital Neighbourhood Association transit committee says the current hospital has 3,100 spots, yet the staff will increase by thousands. The Dows Lake O Train station is located half a kilometre away, across Carling Avenue. | | Charlie Senack in the Kitchissippi Times |
🛻 Convoy News |
▪️Convoy coörganizer Steeve Charland was found guilty of mischief yesterday for his role in the Siege. Charland’s defence was that the Crown had not demonstrated that the Convoy siege was illegal. He will be sentenced in February. | | CBC |
⛓️ Victims of Communism memorial |
▪️The Victims of Communism memorial will be unveiled December 12. The Department of Canadian Heritage has been planning the memorial for 15 years, but it was delayed over the past year after accusations that names of Second World War Nazis might be included. The memorial will be located at Wellington and Bay streets. | | David Pugliese in the Ottawa Citizen |
