WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

⛲ New Hydrant Water Fountains

  •  The City has unveiled the newly redesigned hydrant water fountains. The new design has a bottle refill and bubblers at adult and kid heights. Although they sit on top of regular fire hydrants, they don’t impede access to firefighters. If you think your neighbourhood would be a good candidate for one, email ‘hydrants@ottawa.ca’. (Natasha O’Nell at CityNews)

💰 OC Transpo

  •  A levy on private parking spaces is an idea being considered to raise funds for OC Transpo. The internal working group of Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, three councillors, and city staff came up with the idea to help plug a $23 million deficit that councillors created when it passed the budget earlier this year. The Province would need to change the Municipal Act to allow the City to levy the unspecified fee. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

🚁 Airwolf Ottawa

  •  The Province is buying the Ontario Provincial Police two helicopters to help combat car thefts in Ottawa and Toronto. The Province says the choppers will help cut down on thefts because they will be ‘equipped with the latest technology’, which is unspecified. (CBC)

🏫 Ottawa-Carleton District School Board

  •  First-term Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustee Alysha Aziz is resigning after 22 months. Aziz, who represents Zone 2 in Kanata, says it is for personal reasons. While the Board could call a byelection, as the next polling will be Oct 2026, in the past it has appointed a replacement from those who ran for trustee last time.
