HELLO OTTAWA

  • Birthdays

  • Honestly, we need a better method then this. We try to shout out the birthdays of our members as they come up but our system really is just us writing the dates on our calendar.

  • Which is how we missed Member Irene’s birthday on June 17. Sorry Irene! We’ll remember next year.

  • Magic

  • Congratulations to reader Diane O, whose name was picked to win the tickets to Outerbridge Magic – Mysteries of Keyhole House.

  • Not just hot but a dry summer

Liquor Control Board of Ontario stores closed today for the next fortnight as store workers go on strike.

  • If an agreement can not be made in that time, 30 LCBO stores will reopen for limited Friday, Saturday, and Sunday service – which stores in particular will open will be announced later.

  • Online ordering through LCBO remains open and delivery is free across Ontario.

  • LCBO warehouses also remain open, so restaurants, licenced supermarkets, and rural agency stores will still be stocked. The Beer Store is not involved in the strike and will remain open.

  • The strike doesn’t affect the taprooms of the 35 plus craft breweries across the region, so feel free to shop local. Or visit one of the four local vineyards for wine.

  • The issue for LCBO store workers is an existential one: the Ontario government previously announced that beer, wine, and mixed drinks would soon be available in corner stores, reducing the need for free standing LCBO outlets.

  • Something that hasn't really been talked about is that expanded network of booze outlets will be warehoused and serviced by Trillium Supply Chain Services, a private company owned by DHL, not the LCBO.

    New (to us) Brewery

  • Just this morning, reader Lauren tipped us on a new addition for our Craft Brewery Beer MapKick and Push Brewing Company, which is right on our map’s psychological border in Sharbot Lake.

The brewery is named after the K&P Trail, a 180 km hiking and biking route from Kingston to Renfrew.

  • – Martha and Darren

Number

  • $1,400,000
  • – The damages asked for by the family of a patient who died at the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital when under the care of Dr Brian Nadler.
  • Yesterday, we wrote how Nadler was acquitted over charges of murder of four patients in the hospital and the subsequent $20,000,000 lawsuit he and his family filed against the hospital and some staff members.
  • The lawsuit against Nadler accuses him of administering ‘not indicated’ medicines which ‘would likely be lethal’ to their family member. None of the claims have been tested in court. (Aedan Helmer and Marlo Glass in the Ottawa Citizen)

Ottawan of the Day

Quote

  • Maybe a good bowling alley or something competitive. I haven’t done that in a while, or a mini golf place – I love mini golf once in a while

  • – Third baseman for the Ottawa Titans, AJ Wright, answering the question ‘Is there something you’re looking for in Ottawa you haven’t found?’. The 27 year-old hails from just outside Philadelphia. (Kiersten Vuorimaki in Apartment 613

Helpfully, Apartment 613 advises AJ to check out West Park BowlingMini Golf Gardens, and Mer Bleue Miniputt.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏠 Get Thee a Nunnery

  • The City is in the process of purchasing a former nunnery in Orléans. Maison Notre Dame de la Providence was built in 1960 for the Sisters of Charity – the Grey Nuns – as a retreat and retirement home for its members. The City plans for the building to house 115 refugees on the leafy and secluded 10.5-hectare St. Joseph Boulevard site. The Sisters of Charity strong armed an additional $1 million from the City, for a $11 million purchase price. (Elyse Skura at CBC)

⚕️ Unknown Patient

  • The Ottawa Police Service is asking the public to identify an unconscious patient. The man is between 30 to 40 years old, 5’9, 190 pounds, has short brown hair, and was wearing black shoes, shorts and a white t-shirt. He was found the canal by Rideau Street and Colonel By Drive. There is a picture of two distinctive tattoos – a peace symbol and a maple leaf – in the link. Anyone with information is asked to call 613 236 1222 ext 5166 or email to centralciu@ottawapolice.ca. (Ottawa Police Service)

📺 CJOH

  • Patricia Boal is the new anchor of CTV Ottawa’s News at Six. Previously, she was anchor of News at Five and she will continue her 10:00 am morning show on CFRA radio, ‘Ottawa at Work’. Matt Skube will take over anchoring News at Five and continue hosting the news at 11:30 pm. Longtime News at Six anchor Graham Richardson announced that he was seeking new opportunities last month. (CTV Ottawa)

🎉 Court Circular

  • Guests at the US Embassy’s annual Fouth of July party in Rockcliffe were serenaded by 90s rockers Gin Blossoms. Guests were also treated to Merry Dairy ice cream.

Over at the UK High Commission, High Commissioner Susannah Goshko threw an election watch party to witness the incumbant Conservatives get swept out by a surging Labour Party. US ambassador David Cohen went to that party as well. (Ottawa Playbook)

The Q with Tom Power show on CBC interviewed Green in front of a live audience at the Banff World Media Festival, where he was this year’s recipient of the Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award. It’s a good, career spanning podcast.
