WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️Shopify shareholders approved a plan to give its CEO increased voting power. The owners of the local mom and pop business voted to give Tobi Lütke 40 per cent of the votes at shareholder meetings, as long as he remains as an executive, consultant, or board member. If Lütke leaves the companies, his new power shares will turn into regular shares, enriching him further. [CBC]

▪️The City will create an investment board so it can speculate on a wide range of shares. The Province changed the rules in 2018, allowing municipalities to invest money that it holds but is not currently using into the stock market. Previously, municipalities were limited to very safe investments like Canadian or Provincial backed bonds. The City has about $1,000,000,000 to play with. Last year, the City earned a 1.18 per cent interest rate. [CBC] [Eligible Investments Act]

▪️Two residents of a retirement home have died of listeria. The two lived at City View Retirement Community in Nepean. Two other people are currently ill with the bacteria. Listeria is usually transferred through food which may not have been stored or cooked properly, or by unhygenic food handling. [CBC]
