Mailbag: C’mon people, you’re losing your touch. Reader Mark was the only person to email to us that there were not 19,777 collisions at the intersection of Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive in 2024, but 97. The 19,777 is the total amount of collisions on roads in Ottawa. |
That 97 number was not in the CityNews story Friday but the full report from the Ottawa Police Service has all the details. It’s a very well designed report, too. |
🎂 Happy Birthday to OTTAWAN member Monique G on Saturday! Thank you for supporting us. |

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
🚨 Ottawa Police Service |
▪️A judge has acquitted a man of drug charges after ruling that Ottawa Police Service constables had no grounds for arrest and then lied in court. In 2021, Ottawa Police believed an Ottawa man was transporting drugs and conducted a surveillance. Instead, they saw the man’s brother drive a truck and, suspecting a drug deal might have gone down, the Ottawa constables arrested the brother and his companions, discovering ‘half a kilogram of fentanyl, 19 oxycodone pills, a single anticonvulsant pill and $2,600 in cash’. As the police could not prove that they had had any reason to suspect the brother, or that his truck was under suspicion, they had no grounds for arrest. The judge wrote that one of the constables was not honest in his testimony, when he testified he did have grounds for arrest. The two constables are currently serving on the Ottawa Police Service drug squad. | | Kristy Nease at CBC |

🪧 Ontario Election |
▪️The City has publicized the rules for election signs on public and private property. Signs must: • Not be within three metres of an intersection, within fifty centimetres of a sidewalk, or where there is no sidewalk, within two metres of the roadway • Not be placed on medians or roundabouts. (Good luck with that - Eds) • Be removed within 72 hours after election day, March 2, even from private property. | | City of Ottawa |

📚 The Nation Library |
▪️The Nation, that municipality next door to Ottawa on the east, is seeking library board members. The Nation closed its three libraries in December after its board resigned and chief executive retired. Nation residents have been permitted to use the libraries in Champlain Township, Casselman, Clarence-Rockland, and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry in the meantime. Residents can also request a $60 refund on their property tax but none has been requested so far. Interested persons can apply here. | | James Morgan in The Review |

▪️OC Transpo says Sunday service will not be added to Lines 2 and 4 anytime soon. The agency just added Saturday service but says that there is still work to do before running seven days per week. | | Ted Raymond at CTV |

⛵ City of Ottawa |
▪️The City of Ottawa may have bought an island in the Ottawa River and not publicized it. According to this letter in the West Carleton Online (it’s behind a paywall, THE OTTAWAN pays the $50 per year and it’s worth it), the City bought the 28 acres off of Mohrs Road, across from the village of Galetta. The purchase price is claimed to be $300,000 and is zoned agricultural. Letter writers Mark and Marsha MacGowan say that when they asked West Carleton ward councillor Clarke Kelly about it, it was the first of it that he had heard. Kelly later confirmed to West Carleton Online that the City did buy the island. THE OTTAWAN believes that this is the real estate listing. | | Letter: Galetta island also a City of Ottawa purchase (paywall) |

BUT, ONE MORE THING … |
Sens owner, Toronto billionaire Michael Andlauer, is still trying mea culpa his way out of making it seem like he wanted to move the team to Quebec City. In a decently long interview, he says ‘“I relate to this community a lot more than I did in Montréal or Toronto. It’s more me. I run a public company (ATS Healthcare), I have coffee with the drivers and I love talking to the drivers’. Sens fans, relax. | | Bruce Garrioch in the Ottawa Citizen |
