The Poll

Yesterday, we asked ‘How should the Osgoode ward councillor position be filled?’

69% Call a byelection
18%  Council should appoint someone worthy
4%  Leave it empty
9% Pick a name at random from the voters list

To be honest, we’re unsurprised that calling a byelection is the most popular, people hate having officials foisted upon them.

Just for discussion, we came across this story from Fargo, North Dakota.

For the past seven years, residents have selected their city officials by marking as many candidates as they like on the ballot. This isn’t ranked voting, where the candidate with the lowest votes is dropped and the votes are redistributed, it’s literally whoever gets the most votes wins.

The fact that a winning candidate doesn’t need to have at least 50 per cent of the vote isn’t important, it’s felt that winning candidates have a more broad base of support. It’s in the news because the state legislature is considering banning the system because the winners are too ‘vanilla’.

🗳️ City Council is leaning towards a byelection to fill the Osgoode ward seat when it becomes vacant.

    •  Although Osgoode ward councillor George Darouze was elected as a Member of Provincial Parliament last week, he will not be sworn in until – probably – March 17. Until then he will remain a City councillor. Council today asked City staff to come up with a plan for a byelection in the Osgoode ward, to be debated March 26.

    🚗  Slater Street Parkade

    •  The owners of the partially collapsed Slater Street parkade are consulting with engineers to build a special ramp to free the 50 cars. One car owner says he had to rent a car but he can’t claim it on insurance because there is no damage on the car. Coincidentally, the federally-owned parking garage at 300 Laurier – across the street from the parkade – raised its parking rates 16 per cent the day after the collapse.

🎩 Canada Is Not For Sale

    • The Ottawa-designed ‘Canada Is Not For sale’ hats are finally made in Canada. When the hats were initally launched, Jackpine Dynamic Branding imported caps from Bangladesh and Vietnam and had them embroidered in Toronto. The toques, hoodies, and t-shirts are now made in Toronto while ball caps come  from Montréal.
